I have friends, two lesbian couples, who want to have kids, both couples are interracial and the person carrying the baby would want sperm from the other's race so that they'd have a mixed baby, which reflects their make-up.

@looch: I don't think choosing a donor that may look like your or your DH is a terrible thing at all. I think many people feel that way. Mixed race couples should be allowed to do the same!

@looch: I think the difference is that you would make that choice. What is right for your family. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that as each family needs to make their personal decision. I think it's ridiculous that this clinic makes restrictions on their own.

In the UK adoption policies are that you can only adopt children from similar racial backgrounds as yourselves. This is be ause they think a black child for example, adopted by White parents would attract questions. I imagine most people would assume the baby had a different father. They say that it creates unnecessary difficulties for the child.
Personally I don't think it matters that much as all kids experience some difficulties growing up, but maybe that is more along their resoning?

These are all interesting points, thanks for sharing them. It's such a difficult topic to discuss and I feel like we all have different reasons for the choices we make.

At the end of the day though, I would probably choose donors that had physical resemblances to my husband and me. I hope that doesn't make me come across as a terrible person, but I do support other people's rights to choose differently than I do...which is what I belive this comes down to.

@looch: I was wondering this as well! What if an interracial couple wanted sperm that matched the husband?

That is an appalling rule they have. There are many reasons someone might seek out sperm from another race, not that someone needs to justify it, but there are medical reasons. For example: I'm a CF carrier, Caucasians are significantly more likely to be carriers than other races, so choosing Asian sperm would give me the lowest chance of the donor also being a carrier. I would say avoiding a lethal condition is a totally reasonable reason to want to pick a sample that wasn't of my own race. Who are they to play judge and jury over who deserves a family & what they should look like??

Thanks for clarifying, I find it so diffcult to even begin to think about what I would do in the siutuation of needing a donor. But I do think that this decision should remain in the hands of the parent(s) to be, not the clinic.

From what I understand. They just don't want to provide a different race to a women (or family) of not that race because it would leave the child disadvantage of not knowing about their race since their parents aren't that race didn't grow up in that race?

I believe Mrs. Cowgirl said something along the lines that *some* of her reasoning (again maybe I'm wrong but I think I remember) that she picked to adopt from Korea is because she and her husband are Koreans and they know the challenges of growing up in American as Korean American and they felt they could help guide and advise their child better.

On the flip side I will also have to point out that Mrs. Paintbrush also adopted from Korea and she and her family are not Korea but they are doing a STELLAR job in making sure that they still interoperable Korean aspects into their kids life.

@Happygal: Thanks for pointing that out. I skimmed the article, because I was getting frustrated.

The difference here is that a fertility clinic is helping "create" a child, not place an existing child into a home. The logic "what's in the best interest of the child" is faulty because it's singular. The discussion involves two individual, hypothetical children and what's "best" for one, might not be "best" for another.

@mrswin: Yes, i did see that they receive no government funding but it appalls me that they're doing this because they feel as though it's in the best interest of the child. In the op-ed piece that the friend of DH wrote, there is no evidence that shows children are disadvantaged somehow and such outdated opinions really sadden and anger me!! Thankfully the policy is no longer in place but i wonder how many couples are unofficially discouraged from selecting a donor outside of their ethnicity.

The clinic is making a big assumption about the mother or a couple using a donor of a different race or ethnicity. From what I gather the only reason to oppose something like this is to assume the parent(s) would not teach the child about part of their culture. From what I gather here and have seen in real life that is simply not the case. Parents of mixed race children are acutely aware of how society views their children and they incorporate all of the children's culture into their lifestyle.

@Freckles: I read these articles over the weekend and was similarly appalled by the directors opinion. This is especially acute for me because my eventual LO will be a "rainbow baby". It is important to note though that the clinic is 100% private (receives no provincial support and no public research monies) and so they can make whatever ridiculous rules they please.

It is not something I would ever support and am sad to see this in a Canadian clinic

@TemperanceBrennan: I know, but the director is attempting to use the same types of points that I've seen in the discussions about adoption. The author points out why the two topics are separate in the article:

Dr. Greene has further argued that the policy is similar to provincial adoption guidelines. It is true that Alberta law requires caseworkers handling adoption applications to consider “the benefits to the child of maintaining, wherever possible, the child’s familial, cultural, social and religious heritage.” However, this is one of several factors to be considered and, unlike the donor matching policy, adoption policies do not require a rigid adherence to ethnicity or cultural background, especially in situations where there is no clear or established benefit to a specific child.
