@hellobeeboston: Hello there hellobeeboston. Because a friend of yours did it, gives me hope. However, I am in a third world country. The cost of $ 18,000 is really expensive for me. Anyway, thanks for your reply and concern. I guess I have to consider other options. Good day.

Thank you for your service.

The cost of retrieving your gametes will vary greatly depending on whether it's eggs or sperm. Egg retrieval is a really involved process so it is expensive.

You'll have to pay annual storage fees. It could be anywhere from $400-$1000+ a year. Every clinic is different.

The freezing and thawing technology is great, so I wouldn't stress about a time limit on storing them. My daughter was conceived after she had been frozen as an embryo for 8 years. I have a friend who conceived with a 16 year old frozen embryo.

On the cost front, I'd look into your health benefits through the Army. I saw a news story relatively recently that said that this was beginning to be covered for active duty military, but I don't recall the details. Thank you for your service!

@hellobeeboston: Yes, agree. I'm in NYC and have to do IVF. I know my RE offers egg freezing and it's really similar to the costs of IVF. A full IVF cycle for me is like $25k all in (including meds and anesthesia and so forth). So I would imagine cryopreservation would be slightly less since there are less procedures. But, you'd still eventually need to pay that when ready to use them (they'll charge for thaw, fertilization, transfer and refreezing if you have multiple embryos as a result).

Storage for embryos is $400/yr so I would imagine eggs are similar.

I do have a friend who is very seriously considering freezing her eggs (she's 36.5 and still single) - she's actually been to a few seminars and is doing heavy research. If she ever goes through with it I'll come back and update.

And @sgtbenjie: really do appreciate your service. You are the bravest of the brave.

A friend of a friend did it. She lives in NYC, so perhaps more expensive than normal but I know it was quite costly unfortunately. My friend said it was about $18,000.

They will charge you annually to store the eggs, my sister has embryos frozen from her IVF and it's about $400-ish a year I believe. Not sure if it's different.

Good luck.

I don't have any well informed answers to your questions, but I do want to say thanks for your service. I'd imagine it's much cheaper & easier to store sperm, and you'd just need to find a bank that would store your sample(s). To store eggs, a woman would have to go through retrieval first, then have them stored, and that would be much more expensive & involved. Good luck & stay safe.

June 17, 2017

I am a member of the Army Rangers in a considered “third world country” here in Asia. Our specialty is on bombs, we can be considered experts in Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s). I am only 25 years old, and still single. But, I am also planning to have a family of my own, a big family, that is.

I have read about an army officer from the US, who has stepped on an IED in Afghanistan. His wounds were extensive, but the most serious were those in his genitals. The trauma to his testicles has severely compromised his sperm quality, and this affected his capacity to have a baby.

This incident terrifies me. This can happen to anyone of us during our tour of duty. Because of this, I am considering fertility preservation. (also known as cryopreservation). However, I am wondering if my country has this kind of stuff.

Anyway, for my information, I am asking the following questions?
How much will fertility preservation cost?
How long can my sperm/eggs be safely stored?
I need some answers. Help, please.
