I have no experience with fresh transfers, my RE only does frozen. My two embryos that I transferred worked.

Two years ago, we completed our fresh cycle, transferred 2 and had a blighted ovum. We transferred 2 frosties subsequently and DS is going to turn 1 year old next week. We have one frosty left...

This is interesting to consider. But I think there can be other important factors at play. My RE doesn't reccommend fresh transfers anymore. However, years ago my sister did a fresh and got pregnant so I went forward with fresh. It didn't work for me. My RE says the body environment might not be suitable for transfer right after doing all of the stim meds leading up to retrieval. So when we transferee our two best liking embryos as freshies, I feel like we fried fhem in my body and they were doomed. Subsequent frozen transfer from same batch, with lesser quality embryos, resulting in the baby girl that I'm 32 weeks pregnant with. Anyhow... I'm just not sure how to make any predictions about the potential success of our frozen embryos.

This issue was something I never thought of before we tried (and failed) with 2 FETs in the past few months. My DD is a result of our fresh cycle back in 2014. We have 5 more frosties left and are doing PGD because of studies like this and advice from ladies on this board. @Madison43 you are giving me hope for sure!! I hope we have at least one, and ideally 2 more babies in this batch but if not we'll do another fresh cycle. I'll let you all know how the PGD comes back. It's the way IVF is moving I think.....

Here's a link to the article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/24365019/

I would def ask your RE about the PGE testing. I read that even embryos that test 100% normal have about a 50% chance of implantation due to a number of different factors, eg woman's endometrial lining, whether the embryos have chromosomal abnormality that the PGE tests for (rarer abnormalties are not always detected), etc.
I am not an expert by any stretch though so if any of you guys have heard differently please feel free to speak up.

Anyways my hubby is a doc (just a field far flung from reproductive medicine haha) and his view on this paper is (1) small sample size and (2) the best articles are behind paid subscriptions which would seem to indicate (without him knowing much about the field of RE) that this particular article is not SO highly regarded by RE peers that it ended up in the most prestigious RE journal.

My view on all of this is I want to know whatever pertinent facts I can gather so that I can make an educated decision as to what path to pursue that has the best chance (cost wise and otherwise) of adding another member to our family. Which is pretty much what all of us want and care about right- the big question of: is this going to work? Am I going to take home a baby? Wish the answer to that question were clearer! My best wishes to all of you also on this journey. May we all get the family in our minds - whether that is one child or ten. xoxo

@Mrs.Pinecone316: that would be interesting to know.

I had 4 embryos from my IVF cycle and they were all frozen and went through embryo testing. After testing we had 2 embryos suitable for transfer. My doc was very happy we did testing bc based on their grading at the time of freeze, the one that they would have chosen to transfer as the best one actually turned out to be genetically abnormal and would have been a loss.

So I've only done frozen transfers - first one was not successful. Second frozen transfer worked and I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant.

My LO's teacher's daughter was doing her IVF cycle the same time with the same doc. However, she did a fresh transfer first which was not successful. She did a frozen transfer next and that was successful. She's due one week after me.

Interesting.. I had a successful fresh cycle and 3 frozen embryos which I haven't used yet. I have hoped that there is at least 1 sibling there. '

Did this study say whether the frozen had PGE testing? I am thinking of testing my 3 embryos to bypass the risk of BFN's or miscarriages.

@mopeybuthopey: my IVF cycle in 2013 produced 9 embryos. My fresh transfer from that cycle is my 2.5 yo,, my FET transfer from that batch is my 8 month old and I have 7 still frozen.

Here are my stats:

Fresh IVF 1: :bfn: (1 embryo transferred, 10 embryos frozen)
FET 1.1: :bfp: (2 embryos transfered, 1 stuck - DD :girl: !)
FET 1.2: :bfp: , but chemical pregnancy (2 embryos transferred)
FET 1.3: :bfn: (2 embryos transferred)
FET 1.4: :bfp: , but chemical pregnancy (3 embryos transferred, 1 frozen left)

Fresh IVF 2: :bfp: , but chemical pregnancy (1 embryo transferred, 3 frozen)
FET 2.1: :bfp: (2 embryos transferred, currently pregnant with DS :boy: , 1 frozen left)

So I had greatest success the first FET just after a fresh cycle.

So I've so far had one positive and live birth from a fresh and four positIves from FETs. Three of those miscarried and one is continuing presently.

Now, my last cycle was a freeze all so slightly different to your question BUT they chose the best embryo to put back first as an FET. that took, but ended in miscarriage.

I was petrified that that meant all my other remaining embryos were duds too .. But the second FET from that batch is currently 25 weeks in my belly. So first is not always better, and you can definitely beat the odds.

(Also, for what it's worth, the cycle I had with #1 we had 3 embryos and all 3 took, even though two of those ended. I have lots of Ivf friends who have siblings from the same batch - it's all luck!)

I did not have success with a fresh transfer. It was probably embryo quality because I didn't have success with my own embryos. I went through 2 FETs and all my embryos survived the thaw. They just didn't stick.

My daughter is the result of an FET with donor embryos. I had 5 frozen embryos. On my day is transfer 4 were thawed. Two of them didn't survive and two were transferred. I have one left frozen.

I had a successful fresh cycle and then 3 blasts frozen. Using the frozens I had one bfn (one transferred) and one blighted ovum (2 transferred) so I would say his theory is true for me.

FET ladies - I'm weighing my options as to whether to do a FET in the next few months.

I read an article recently where the author found that "Fresh transfer outcome predicts the success of a subsequent frozen transfer utilizing blastocysts of the same cohort." He concluded that very few embryos from any ivf cycle are viable, and therefore, if you're successful with your fresh cycle you're much less likely to be successful with a FET. The article has only a small sample size and I want to ignore it... but in the interest of weighing options:

Did any of you guys have successful fresh cycle transfer + a successful frozen cycle transfer? If so, would you be willing to share some of your stats, like how many embryos you froze, how many tries before conceiving with the frozen ones, and anything else that you think could be helpful? Thank you :)
