Thanks for all the advice, and for making me feel better! This was his first fever, and his brother was much older when he had his first fever (and now that I think about it, B's first fever led to a seizure) so I was pretty anxious about it, but he seems much better now.

@erinbaderin: for me at that age I called the doctor right away. I'd rather take them in and its nothing than wait it out

I think your judgement sounds spot-on. For me, if still active, playing, drinking well, I would give it a few days (particularly if you know he's been exposed to a virus). Excessive coughing, apparent pain (ears?), or "acting sick" would make me go in sooner. That said, do what makes you comfortable!

@Truth Bombs: I have heard this, but I've also heard that it's fine (for example here: http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/health-concerns/childhood-illnesses/medicine-cabinet/ibuprofen) Since the Tylenol made him throw up I thought we might have more success this way.

@erinbaderin: Just FYI its not recommended to use Advil prior to 6 months. I know he's close but I'd stick with Tylenol.

Our pediatrician's rule of thumb is 3 days. If nothing else is bothering him, he's not behaving oddly, and he's still eating and making wet diapers, they recommend just waiting it out. If after 3 days the fever is still there, then they'd want to see him.

At that age, I'd take my LO to see the doctor if it goes over 102 or lasts for 24 hours without breaking at all.

W is five and a half months old, and has had a mild fever since yesterday afternoon. The highest I've seen it is 101.7. I tried to give him Tylenol yesterday but immediately after I gave it to him he threw up everywhere, so I don't think that helped much. This morning he's still warm, I gave him Advil but not sure how much actually got swallowed. He's still nursing, doesn't seem lethargic, and is having wet diapers, he's just grumpier than usual and going for naps sooner.

How long do you let a young infant have a mild fever before you see a doctor? If it went higher or seemed to be affecting him in some other way I'd go but with just the fever I'm not sure.
