Idk but maybe because its easy to quickly add more to a bottle whereas from the breast it can't change the amount in one feeding all at once? Idk!

LO is EBF (+ solids now as she's nearly 10 months) and she never had an issue with growth spurts. I never even knew when she had them as her feeding schedule didn't noticeably change. She has slept 12 hours through the night since 2.5 months and the only times since then that I've done night time feeds are when we travelled overseas (time zone adjustment) and once earlier this week as we've moved across country and I think she's all thrown off!

So based on my experience, it doesn't make any difference.

LO is 15 weeks old and only FF. She generally STTN from 9:30pm til 5am, eats, then back down from 6 til 8 or 9am (since 9weeks old). But we still have bad nights when she is up every hour or so and eats less more frequently, it is usually a few days in a row up to a week and then back to STTN. I think the bad stretches coincide with either a growth spurt or wonder week so my thought would be that it doesnt matter BF or FF.

@stargal: ditto. My LO didn't sleep better when we switched to FF but I do know a lot of babies who STTN early on who were FF.

DS was bf until about 6/7 months or so, then put on formula. He woke at least twice a night while bf, but as soon as he was put on formula he slept through the night 12 hours straight. So, in my experience ff babies do sleep better than bf babies.

Everything I've anecdotally heard and been told points to FF sleeping longer. That said while my LO is ebf he's never been a big cluster feeder. He also doesn't STTN yet.

Both my husbands boys slept through the night as infants and were exclusively formula fed.

It will be interesting to see what happens with mine because I *plan* to exclusively breast feed.

I'm also not sure about FF babies but I don't recall my friends who FF say they had to cluster feed - maybe just increased amount at feeding. DD was EBF and definitely cluster fed during growth spurts, and I knew when each one was. BF was the only way to calm her when she wanted to cluster feed and then she'd sleep better afterwards. I also agree that it's probably nature's way to increase mom's supply to handle baby's increasing nutritional needs.

hmmm interesting question....i am not sure about FF babies, but it usually took about a week for M to get through the growth spurts (she is EBF). during growth spurts, the baby nurses more to increase your supply, so however long it takes your supply to catch up to their increased needs is usually how long it lasts. i would imagine for FF babies, you can simply increase the amount per feeding and it would catch up to their needs right away?

In my experience, vs friends who BF... yes, FF babies sleep better. It could very well just be C, because girl LOVES her sleep, but she was still sleeping a good long stretch at night even at her worst. I would say she was 6pm-2/2:30am and then every 3 after at her worst, which is still only 2 night wakings.

We never really dealt with cluster feedings or anything either. She would calorie-load during the day and switch to eating every 2 hours instead of every 3.

Do you think FF babies handle growth spurts better than BF babies in terms of night feedings? At 12 weeks LO has started waking every 3 hrs again to eat. Do FF babies wake up for more bottles during spurts ? Just curious ! What was your experience ?
