@looch: Fluoride is good but like anything else in excess it can have negative effects - so while at lower levels fluoride strengthens teeth if it's consumed in excess it can weaken both bones and teeth. One of the problems with babies is they consume basically all their calories through drinking so it's a lot easier to consume fluoride in excess if both formula is fluoridated (most is to a low level) and the water used to mix it is heavily fluoridated. A lot of dentists seem to know the current research on fluoride so I'd probably ask them to help get the right balance.

@Smurfette: You can get nursery water that has no added Fluoride. That's what we used for Anna until we switched to the Ready to Feed formula.
It's not all Fluoride infused. And in all honesty, it's filtered water. Not a big enough deal to stress over.

I don't FF, but my pediatrician said we could use tap water for it! We live in a city and she is familiar with our water though, so it probably depends on where you live and stuff. I suspect you're fine using tap though! :)

@wheres_c: Did you actually get someone to do that? I filled out an online form a long time ago, and never heard anything. We had been thinking about getting a whole house filter because our water leaves orange marks everywhere and weren't sure what to buy.

I read our water report every quarter and I know they say it's fine. But I'm still skeeved out by it. I can't imagine giving it (unfiltered) to the baby.

I use tap water too. In fact, at our last pedi visit she asked if we had city or well water to determine whether we needed to supplement with fluoride starting at our next visit. Since we have city water, she confirmed that there's no need to supplement as fluoride is added.

As a nanny I used bottled with one, and later tap with another until they got a fridge with filtered water and they used that. I wouldn't use tap water, but I don't feel comfortable with flouride since it's poisonous.

Tap water. Baby benefits from all the minerals and flouride. No need to filter all that stuff out. Municipal water is by and large terrific. You should get a summary of your water's content once a year in a mailer or you can go on your local municipal website for details.

I'm adding a link that validates my approach with a statement from the AAP.
