@regberadaisy: aw. Well you could always mix prunes into something else if you don't want to do just prunes.

@2littlepumpkins: DD1 never had constipation issues. She's always been very regular like daddy LOL! I'm thinking #2 is more like me in that department.

@tiramisu: I definitely think part of the problem is we haven't started water yet!

I have to give my DD prunes almost everyday to help with constipation. I also give her yogurt, water and sometimes raspberries. Bananas make my LO constipated but she does enjoy eating it.

'P' fruits. My daughter had really bad constipation after starting solids. We eventually discovered that kiwis worked the best for her.

Pears are good. Dd ate a lot of those and never had constipation problems. Grape (usually store bought Apple-grape or something like that.) Green veggies. I think sweet potatoes also have a decent amount of fiber in them. Carrots (not a ton of fiber but I don't think they cause constipation either.)

Cooked fruits and veggies general have less fiber than raw. That's part of why applesauce is low fiber. I thought it was the opposite with ripe/in ripe bananas. I do know they have soluble fiber which is less likely to keep things moving.

If you google "fiber in xyz" it will usually bring up grams per cup or something like that.

Good luck, let us know what works!

@regberadaisy: It's the sorbitol in prunes and pears that make them good for constipation. Sorbitol works better than fiber for getting things going. Fiber makes bigger poops but not necessarily easier poops.

I've never had an issue with bananas being constipating! Decided to look it up and it's unripe bananas that are constipating. But will keep away from her for now just to be safe.

Will try peas tomorrow since I have it. I know beans are super rich in fiber but also gassy so I don't think that will help.

@Weagle: interesting!

You know the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) for when you have diarrhea? It works to solidify things... so it does the same to babies. Agree with P foods... pears, peaches, prunes, plums, peas.

@regberadaisy: Whole apples are but most of the fiber is in the skin. Ounce for ounce, raw apples have something like 2-3x the fiber of applesauce. Some is lost in the cooking.

@regberadaisy: we did peaches, pears, and prunes to keep things moving. Apple juice can help constipation, but applesauce won't. And bananas can definitely be constipating!

I got a little carried away in my baby's excitement to eat real food! I didn't keep in mind that it might be binding for her to be digesting real food for the first time. She was super constipated and uncomfortable all yesterday. Like a doofus I didn't put two and two together.
Anyway, I'm going to take a step back this week and go a little easier. And remember to offer fiber rich foods at least every other day for a bit.

Today I made her applesauce, I've got pears ripening and bananas are a constant. Any other fiber rich foods easily givens to babies? I know prunes are definitely one but we'll save that for an emergency scenario. ;)
Drawing a blank otherwise!
