@MrsH: I had to have an abdominal myomectomy in 2010 to remove a bunch of huge fibroids (after having a miscarriage-that's when they were discovered). I hope you don't have to have that surgery, but if you do, please feel free to ask me any questions that you may have!

@Mrs.Someone: You have such a good memory :)

@MrsH: I was TTC for 13 months before we started working with an RE. During the diagnostic testing, specifically the HSG test, they found a uterine fibroid. It was confirmed with a saline sonogram and I even took a picture of the sonogram for my own records :) The fibroid I had looked like a dam in my uterus. It wasn't causing me any pain, but in my opinion it also wasn't helping my causes either. Because I wasn't able to get pregnant.

I had the fibroid removed via hysteroscopy. I was out for the procedure so I don't remember a thing. I recovered easily. I began my fertility treatments after my first period after the procedure, and became pregnant 4 months after the surgery. My RE won't say that is what the cause of my infertility was, I'm officially "unexplained". But I think it was that damn dam in my uterus ;)

I hope your OB is able to help you get the answers you need. I recommend an RE if you feel that you are not getting the help you need from your OB.

I had a uterine fibroid a few years ago. I had extremely irregular bleeding - I bled for 3 weeks, had a week off, and then bled for two more before seeking treatment. It was not only constant but heavy (sorry for the tmi). My OB removed it during an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia. It didn't end up affecting my fertility. I have a 5 month old conceived naturally in spite of the fibroid and PCOS. They also found another fibroid during the cycle I ended up pregnant, but it was much smaller and they just left it alone. It didn't affect LO, and I don't have any symptoms at all this time around. I don't think I'd have known about this one without the RE ultrasounds. Thinking of you!

I just recently had a large one removed. It was on the outside of my uterus (pedunculated). I just found a pamphlet from my surgery that explains the different types. I wish I could attach a picture but I'm sure you could look them up. The other types are submucosal, subserosal, and intamural. Those three are all in the walls of the uterus and may cause issues with TTC. The other kind is called intercavitary. This one is similar to a pedunculated one in that is has a stalk that is attached to the uterine wall. Depending on what type you have, it may be causing some fertility issues. My fibroid just caused me a ton of pain even though I wasn't having periods because of taking my BCP continuously.

They can be removed through a myomectomy surgery. Mine was done robotically so it was minimally invasive. Apparently getting fibroids is a pretty common thing. Some times they aren't painful. Mine wasn't initially until it got past a certain size.

Hope that helps. Good luck at the doctor.

P.S. I thiiiink my sister in-law had a fibroid and wasn't getting pregnant after going through infertility treatments (her DH was snipped so they had to do ivf) and after it was removed she got pregnant. I have heard they can cause problems with conceiving. Gosh, I hope everything works out for you!!! Xoxo

Hi there. I have/had multiple fibroids some of which are very large. Based on my personal experience, it seems that fibroids affect everyone differently. For some women, they will cause pain, for others none (that was me). For some, they will not grow very much, for other they can become quite large. The location of the fibroids matters as well. If the fibroid is located within the uterus it can cause heavy periods or possible pre-term labor. I do know that they can possibily affect conception, but I am not too familiar with that. In my case, my fibroids blocked my cervix, so I needed a C-section. Other than that, pregnancy was A-okay.

I'm assuming since it was found during an ultrasound that you may not have had symptoms of them before? I didn't so they were a surprise to me. when they were found I had a very easy pregnancy even with very, very large ones.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Please tell we what you know about fibroids and your experiences with them. I had an ultrasound this morning and the dr just called to say I need to see my OB ASAP (my yearly is Thursday so I guess that is good timing) because they found fibroids.

We have been TTC since our m/c in July.
