@Sammyfab: @brownie: Thanks for all your advice! It really is nice to know that this is normal and that I'm not doing anything horribly wrong.

Tomorrow is another day! I'll try your suggestions tomorrow and see how it goes. I hope that this phase will pass soon.

Crying after a short nap always means I put down too late with my LO. I'd shorten the waketime to 3.25-3.5. It sounds like you're doing everything right so I would just trudge through and chalk it up to a developmental blip (wonder week). I've personally never tried shortening waketimes during wonder weeks because I know for us they'll yield shorter naps.

Re: solids, I'd definitely try upping fats like yogurt, cheese, butter, avocados etc.!

@NerdBee: Another thing I did, I used daycare a lot. So, maybe one nap time with a babysitter or trusted friend (or dad) so you can get away from the struggle. It helped me keep my sanity.

@NerdBee: Good Luck with it all. I know it's hard but it does end. We can power through until then! I just liked knowing I wasn't alone and it that was normal (even if it sucked).

@brownie: wow thanks for the link! Definitely bookmarking it. It does sound like he may be going through a wonder week. He has been studying things very intently recently and seems very aware of his surroundings.

I have tried to shorten his awake time to compensate for his short naps and night wakings but this has been causing melt downs prior to naps and bedtime :/

That's why I was running out of ideas and coming here for help. But you have given me lots to think about. Thanks again!

@NerdBee: Yes. http://www.thewonderweeks.com/index.php/about-the-wonder-weeks/your-babys-10-leaps/mental-leap-6 Usually, you just tough it out and in a few weeks, it gets all better. Chronicles of a Babywise Mom suggests actually shortening wake times when in the middle of a wonder week. Once I found this and could see when my kid would go crazy I at least didn't feel so crazy anymore. And after the wonder week was over I found that he would be ready for all sorts of new things like a longer wake time.

@Sammyfab: He did wake up crying from his second nap but was all cheery and smiley once I got him from his crib. I did a 3.5h awake time before his second nap yesterday (I put him down earlier but he cried until then) and only napped 30 minutes. That's why I thought to extend it a bit more today but he napped even worse! Ugh!

For his first nap, he wakes up about 30 minutes into it but then goes back to sleep for another 30-40 minutes. Is that significant in any way? He never did that before.

He takes about 4 to 6oz during his early morning feed so I guess he's hungry. He has been on 3 meals of solids for a while now. He eats all the food groups and I feed him until he turns his head away so I think he's getting enough food. Maybe I should feed him more high fat foods like full fat dairy, avocados, etc? Do I need to incorporate snacks too?

@brownie: so is this something that I will just have to ride out? I wonder if extending his awake time was the right thing to do.

I don't think it's a 1-nap issue. I think you were right in extending waketimes a little but a 30-minute jump is a lot. It sounds like you got it right for the first nap but maybe try 3.5 for the second nap. Did he wake up crying from his 2nd nap?

Is he taking a full feed at 3-4 am? There is a growth spurt at 9 months but it doesn't usually get recognized like other growth spurts because that's when solids naturally increase to 3 meals a day. Is he doing well with solids?

@BabyBoecksMom: no colds and he's been army crawling for a few weeks now. He doesn't seem to be working on any other physical milestones. It looks like his 6th tooth is almost Breslin through his guns but he has never acted this way when his other teeth came through so this is baffling.

I thought he might be going through a growth spurt so I was feeding him when he woke up at night but I'm not sure if that explains fighting the second nap and his seemingly sudden ability to extend his awake times. He jumped from 3 hours first awake interval to 3.5 hours and he still cries a bit when put down. I just don't know what to think anymore.

This sounds to me like a classic wonder week issue. When the wonder week is over, the wake times do usually extend. But I suspect he will still be at 2 naps. We did 2 naps until mine was 18 months old (all kids are different and it is just an example).

Has he had any recent colds or milestones? Do you think he could be teething or going through a growth spurt?

LO is 1 week shy of 9 months and has been fighting naps like crazy for the past few days.

He is on two naps and used to have awake times of 3h/3.25h/3.5h. But lately when I put him down at after the usual awake times, he cries for 20-30 minutes before sleeping. So today, I tried extending his awake time. The first one, I extended to 3.5h and he slept for 1h 10 min. The second one, I extended to 3.75h and he seemed sleepy since his eyes started getting droopy while playing but he cried when I put him down and he napped only 20 minutes! He is also waking at 3 or 4am an sometimes not going back down after a feeding.

I can't figure out if he's undertired or overtired. Could he be transitioning to one nap? He's barely 9 months which seems early for only one nap. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?
