@78h2o: I found any soap works if I wash by soaking in very hot soapy water for at least ten minutes and then give a quick scrub and rinse.

Use white vinegar - it's breastmilk residue. It's totally normal.

In the dishwasher, pour 1/2 cup or so of vinegar in the bottom before you run it - it'll prevent it.

@78h2o: is it a film or a scale? If it's a scale, you'll have it whether you boil, sanitize, or wash your bottles - because your water is hard and it's a mineral deposit.

Our water is really hard and I get the water really hot and soak the bottles for 5-10 in in seventh generation soap, and that seems to take care of the film as long as I scrub really hard and carefully. If I boil them I get a white powdery scale on the bottles that I just wipe off with a dry cloth and let air-dry.

@CakeLady: @KatieBklyn: Thanks for the rec, I'm going to try it.

I did go out to buy some new ones, but for now I am keeping the old. I will try the new soap and see how that goes before pitching.

@78h2o: is it breastmilk? I get this if I don't hand wash bottles and it is fat residue.

I had that film on my bottles. I attributed it to the fat in the milk. Putting them in the dishwasher didn't do much for it, but scrubbing it really good with a bottle brush and some Dawn helped a lot.

pretty sure it is milk residue -- I handwash with Dapple and my Medela bottles stay clear. When DH washes or puts them in the dishwasher, there is always that film.

@78h2o: Definitely the dishwasher. I washed a few of our bottles in the dishwasher and the rest I always hand washed and sterilized. The dishwasher ones are the only ones that developed that filmy look.

I have some Dr Brown bottles that in using from big sister that we used breastmilk in and I've never had that problem. I hand wash with hot soapy water and sterilize nightly. So might be the dishwasher? I would buy new.

I read somewhere in Medela material (I think) that bottles and parts should be soaked in soapy water for 10 min before washing. When I do that they always look cleaner.

@Mamaof2: Could definitely be the dishwasher, but the ones in the photo had most recently been through the dishwasher and then boiled... so I don't know.

@78h2o: I think its the dishwasher. Try cleaning your dish washer or start hand washing your bottles.

I NEVER put bottles in the dish washer and never had film. We have this issue with our plastic Tupperware too!

I boiled these 3 months ago for 20-30 min. They were clear. I put them in a ziplock and into storage, just pulled them out. It has happened with other things though that went through the dishwasher. I'm thinking I may go buy new bottles...

ETA: film is on both sides

We use Avent bottles - regular and natural versions. Many of our bottles have developed a film on them (easy to wipe away, but it comes back). I boiled all our bottles between baby 1 and 2... the film went away and came back. Is this likely from our water? Are the bottles old/desinigrating? Anything to make the film go away and not come back? Or should I chuck them all and start over? Same thing is happening with a few of our Medela bottles, but not the majority (many of them are new though, so I wonder if that's why?).
