we've gone through referrals from friends or found colleagues of friends who are younger and interested in sitting for extra money. so far, we've only really used them though when we knew the LO would basically sleep the whole time. it is so tough! We pay $12 an hour, which is apparently on the low end where we live (which is crazy to me! but what are you gonna do...)

I have used care.com. Some of them have background checks, and if they don't have one available, you can request one. Some also have references online and ready to go, or of course you can check one the old-fashioned way.

We found a good sitter who I'm pretty happy with that way. And the going rate totally depends on your area. Care.com said 8/hr was the going rate in my area, which I felt was low, so we pay 10-12/hr.

Why wouldn't/couldn't you start talking to neighbours? I would be doing that over something like craigslist in a heart beat!

Our LO isn't here yet, and after the initial baby craze ends with fam and friends and we need a babysitter, ours is 6 doors down!

LO is fifteen weeks today, and DH and I are definitely feeling the lack of quality time together. We'd love to be able to find a babysitter to leave her with so we could go out on our own occasionally, but I don't know where to look! Neither of us have family nearby, we don't live near where we work, and we don't talk to our neighbors much either to ask for recommendations. Did anyone have luck with finding a sitter through other means? I was wondering about care.com, craigslist, advertising at a local college, etc. How do we check them out to make sure they aren't sketch? What do babysitters get paid nowadays anyway? Probably more than the $4/hour I got back in high school...
