M got an offer in December started Jan 6 last year. It depends on the industry. I'd start putting feelers out now. Others may assume the same thing and it may be less competitive.

@hotchildinthecity: that was my first thought too ... but the bonuses come out at the end of the year! hahaha .. maybe it's a finance thing. I would prob start looking now, but actively pursuing would probably happen in Jan/Feb.

In my industry, it's next to impossible. Fiscal year is here and everybody's scrounging for the last bit. I have never known anybody to start in Nov/Dec (plus, a lot of holiday pay is doled out that time of year) versus in early Jan. But it's certainly the time of year for interveiwing for early 2015.

DH interviewed here in Oct, got his offer right before Christmas, and started mid Jan.

I spent the last nearly two years applying for jobs--I applied to MANY jobs and had 0 interviews from early November until mid-January, when I had several a week. My current employer does most of their hiring at the beginning of their fiscal year (July 1) when budgets are fresh and there is money for new employees.

Usually, we're in a hiring freeze at the end of the year, so there's that to consider as well. All the money for the year has been spent, so you have to wait until after bonuses are paid out, in either Feb or March.

For the most part, yes. It depends on the industry and position but as already mentioned, a lot of people are waiting for their bonuses so they won't leave around the end of the year. There is also year end to consider, which would be a busy time of year for employers to go through the hiring process. Also, since there is so much time off towards the end of the year, it's usually easier to hire someone in the new year.

When I was last job hunting (5 yrs ago) I got laid off at the beginning of November and didn't get any bites until February. I didn't get my current job until June, though this was during the recession.

I started most of my jobs at year end so not really! Right place, right time. Someone is always hiring so I would look any time of the year.

I think in a lot of professions, the 4th quarter is when most hiring is done...but it depends on your line of work, I guess.

Sadly, yes. Once it hits Thanksgiving, many people don't focus on hiring but rather on year-end work or are just out of the office with vacations.

I found the best job I've ever had last fall, started in mid-November. I think it's all due to chance- when someone happens to leave bc of any number of things. You just have to be seriously looking at any given time. Dream jobs can pop up at any time. That's what happened in my case.

in my industry (finance) no one leaves at the end of the year because we're holding out for our bonuses. So I would wait, personally

@Smurfette: you're not unemployed right? Just looking for greener pastures?

I just have this feeling I won't be finding a new job by the end of of the year. But on the bright side I at least have unemployment insurance and get to spend time with DD 2! It's like an an extended maternity leave.

I found it easier towards the end of year because it seemed like that was when companies were planning out their resources and budget for the new year. My company recently put out a bunch of job recquisitions and blasted it out to the company - walled you!
