We found our sitter through an agency. This way, she was pre-screened and we wouldn't have to personally run any background checks.

I agree that I'd def. look elsewhere if they were refusing to have a background check run. I'd also be leery if someone wanted to be paid under the table.

I think that them being afraid of a background check is a great way to determine they aren't the person for you. Also, see how comfortable they are when you mention calling their references. Any anxiety or hesitation may be a bad thing.

Phew...so, I'm not completely crazy for wanting to run background checks on these prospects. :)

Are there any signs that I should be watching out for in a nanny?

It is a job, and most jobs require background checks, I don't understand why they would expect this to be any different unless they had something to hide.

everyone i've interviewed has been fine with me running a background check on them. it isn't unreasonable -- they're going to be caring for your most prized possession! but at the same time i don't know anyone that has run background checks on korean ahjummahs so i understand the hesitation on her end. but the lawyer advising her not to work for you is weird!

It's definitely not unreasonable. I've only interviewed 4 babysitters but no one had a problem with me taking a copy of their passport/drivers license and running a background check. I would never hire anyone w/o running a background check.

hi, bee!

i followed you to here! :)

well, i'm not sur if that's why because one of them claims that she's a US citizen and she's worked for a non-korean lawyer. he advised her not to work for us if we're telling her we need to run background checks on her. who knows if she's even telling me the truth. >.<

If they're Korean babysitters/nannies, they're probably not used to people running background checks on them. It's definitely not unreasonable, and a nonkorean nanny would probably be fine with it. Do you think it could be because they don't have their green card?

I just started looking for a nanny/babysitter for my child and would like to ask if you have any advice for me.

I actually found 2 prospects but when I told them that I'm going to run a background check on them, they both declined the job. They also told me none of their previous employers ran a background check on them and that what I'm asking is completely ridiculous. Is this for real? It's one thing if I met these people through someone I trust or they have worked for someone I know for a long time... I found them through a Korean Craligslist type of website!

I've heard and watched too many horror stories about nannys/babysitters so I'm just trying to be careful...am I being unreasonable?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
