I got recommendations from my PCP. They recommended three that worked with my insurance. I went to one and it wasn’t a fit after two sessions, but she suggested someone whose style gelled more with me. Occasionally DH comes to my sessions but my therapist is very clear that she won’t do my individual and couples counseling for both of us to avoid perceived conflict of interest. When DH comes to mine it’s all about how he perceives my anxiety/depression. She would see him separately if he wanted to.

Before I went to my PCP I found someone on psychology today that said she specialized in issues related to pregnancy loss, which is when my problems started, and she was AWFUL, so do your research, but for me recommendations were better than finding someone online.

I second what @Mrs. Carrot: recommended - start with your insurance and then check the database on PsychologyToday.com. They don't have everyone, but its a great way to see what's out there and come up with a few potential options. You may still have to do meet and greet sessions to see if the fit is good.

Unfortunately it might take some time, but it's worth it to find someone you will click with. Your insurance and Psychology Today have databases of therapists you can look through to get you started. If you don't have a good feeling after a couple of sessions, try someone else. It's frustrating but worthwhile.

In terms of counseling, my therapist would not see my husband because she didn't want to create a conflict of interest. When we went to a marriage counselor together, she occasionally would ask us to do separate sessions, but overall her focus was on us both. I would recommend starting with a couples counselor, if you're both ready to take the step, and then see if that helps, and if you need individual therapy, go from there. Good luck!

One therapist I did speak to over the phone and then went in person. Another one they have you meet the director of the clinic and from filling out questionnaires and talking to them in person, they suggest which therapist in the practice they think would fit with you well. Both options worked out well for me thankfully.

From my experience I have had the opportunity to have a free phone consultation to see if it’s a good fit both ways. Perhaps there are some counsellors willing to provide this service?

I don’t have good advice because I looked for someone for myself and ended up giving up. But, are you going to try to go through insurance? That would be a good place to start if you wanted insurance to cover any of it. Otherwise I hope other people have good advice. It can be so overwhelming even after you have made to decision to get the help you need.

Things have happened recently that make me thing that DH and I need counseling. Probably both separately and together. However, I have no idea how to even begin to find a good therapist. For those who see someone, how did you find them? I only know of one person locally who does and have talked to her. Unfortunately her recommendation wouldn't work for us as the hours they are open are ridiculously small. Obviously not looking for a specific person since you don't know where I live but just looking for general advice on how to find someone.

Also, if you need counseling separate and together, do you go to the same person for both?
