Don't be fooled, adoption is a big (albeit mostly non-profit) business. Hopefully your counselor will be someone who has placed a child herself, so that she can relate to what you are going through. It's an emotional roller coaster for all involved.</p> <p>You'll also have to decide whether you want an open situation where you and the child have open access to each other (this is what we have and we love it, but our birth mother says that sometimes it is emotionally hard for her. Sometimes she takes a step back and that's ok with us too), or you can have semi-open (varies but usually pics and letters) or closed (rare nowadays). You can read some of my blog posts for more about pros and cons of these choices.</p> <p>Also know that you have the most power before you select an adoptive family and before placing. Get everything you want from the agreement before things are locked in. Don't be afraid to wait for the perfect adoptive family. You have lots of choices and you will be able to find people who will reflect the values and family style you want your child to be raised in.</p> <p>Feel free to wall me for more information. We actually picked our agency based on how strong of advocates they were for birth moms. I have both an adopted child and three bio kids. It is very brave of you to try to make that choice. Although I was on the other side of the process I would be happy to chat with you. We went through a private agency that did a lot of birth mother counseling before birth so I am sure you could start the process if you wanted. I know ours even helps moms set up a parentin plan if they choose to keep the baby. My birth mom was someone who, like you, was surprised to get a positive test and knew she couldn't keep me due to finances and a million other concerns. She chose adoption and my adopted parents have been the most amazing, loving influence in my life and have provided me with so much. My birth mom has told me, now that I'm an adult, that she is forever grateful to them and I have told her that I am so grateful for HER and her brave choice!
