Oh! I just remembered, we've started playing with the latch/lock board too. It's still too advanced for LO, but she likes to open and close the doors and move the pieces. You can DIY one too.

Pushing cotton Pom Pom balls through a container with a hole in the top (you can use a wipes container...Huggies has a great opening that is soft & fits together like a zipper)

Putting small objects in a muffin tin (mini or regular) or ice cube tray

Matching small objects on pictures taped on a tray (she may need to be a little older for this one, but my 21 month old likes this)

Using magnets

Using small tongs to pick up & transfer objects

Puzzles with knobs or pegs to move the pieces.

Google "toddler Montessori practical life" and I bet you'll find some more ideas!

One L's favorite 'toys' is one I made for motor skill purposes (18 months and still loves it!). I took an empty plastic container (used folgiers can), cut a slit in the lid, got some large discs from the dollar store (coins, but they are like 3" diameter) and put stickers of animals on them. I dump out the discs, put the lid on, and she puts them in through the slit. Over and over and over and overrrrr again. Cost me $2!

Good ideas! Today we put little uncooked elbow pasta in cups and bowls and poured them back-and-forth and dumped it out and picked them all up and put them back in the container. We also have little shape sorter stacking blocks from Melissa and Doug. He worked on putting the right shape in the right hole.

Wow! So many good ideas! We've been playing with a shape sorting toy and LO is about the same age (still a little difficult for her). She also loves putting toys through this bathtub basketball hoop thing. Moving small items from one container to another?

Hi Bees,

So I'm trying to work on developing my 17 month old's fine motor skills per her visit with the OT. I got some good ideas from her but I was wondering if anyone else had other good toys, activities, ideas?

Here's what I have so far:

-Pushing wooden doll pins through holes in a lid of a container
-Putting coins in a piggy bank
-Scribbling with crayons
-Painting with whipped cream, finger paint, yogurt
-Filling a large clear container with pinto beans and burying treasures for her to find
-Wooden stacker toys
-Stacking blocks and foam shapes
-Peeling off stickers (cheap labels) and sticking them on a Manila folder
-Using a spoon to self feed (going to tempt her with applesauce)
-Putting different buttons into a ice cube tray
-Snap and lock beads
-Mega Bloks

Anything else? I'm going to buckle down and really purposefully work with her. And since it's scorching hot outside it will be fun to stay indoors and do stuff like this!
