Banana and steamed broccoli worked for us as the first two foods. With banana I cut the bottom third off, then took that piece and cut away a section of the skin so she could hold the skin and eat the portion sticking out. It works well although half the time she tried to put the wrong end in her mouth. Neither broccoli leave a long stalk to serve as a handle to be grabbed .

Around that age, LO liked shredded cheese and the Plum Organics cremes that dissolve. I also gave her sliced cucumbers, celery, and sliced radishes for "chewing" on. Not that she actually ate any of them. But she enjoyed it. I'd also just shred things into small pieces and put them directly in her mouth. That was a little more successful when she wasn't into foods yet.

sliced and roasted pears and apples have been staples for several months in LO's diet. roasted sweet potatoes were a hit for a while but they have lost serious ground. raspberries and chunks of mango are favorites also.

@Revel: my LO loves eating chunky mashed avocado off a spoon by herself. We also do that with bananas since they're pretty slippery and she gets frustrated.

We also do sweet potatoes julienned an roasted with olive oil, steamed broccoli, zucchini and squash... Pretty much any soft veggies.

@Revel: the banana does get slippery! But LO still loved it! You can leave some of the peel on as a handle, or LO would pin the banana between his hand/arm and the highchair tray and gum it!

We offered pretty big chunks. Avocado and sweet potato we just put a lump/pile in front of him to play with. He'd lick it off his fingers. The oatmeal we'd make into fingers/squares he could pick up.

@Revel: I think with avocado its mushy enough that if they swallow before gumming it'll slide down okay. I'm paranoid about choking... our cubes are pretty small, but big enough that he can at least TRY to pick them up. Although mushiness and slipperiness makes that tough too. I usually just end up popping one in his mouth here and there!

@2PeasinaPod: Yes, she will take the chunkier purees. Maybe giving her something like mashed avocado that that will stick to the spoon and then letting her try to feed herself would be a good idea.

@Revel: Can you try feeding with a spoon chunkier purees? Like mashing the avocado instead?

@knittylady: @cmomma17: Thanks! So even things like banana that are slippery work ok?

And how large do you cut them so LO can get a handle on them?

I was giving bits of meat one day and she gagged on it and threw up and I've been paranoid about chunks of food ever since.

Bananas and avocado were our first finger foods. I've also found that butternut squash cooked a little longer gets very soft!

Interested in this too! DS loves his purees, but is getting frustrated because he wants to feed himself. So far he likes puffs and cubed avocado. I'm getting excited to start having him eat what we eat! (And a tad impatient I suppose..)

DS is 7 months as well.

Anyone have any inspiration for good finger foods for my seven month old? We've basically just done purees. She's not super into food and sometimes these days seems frustrated when we try to feed her with the spoon, so I thought maybe she'd like something we could put on her tray.
