@katsupgirl: He definitely doesn't push food away...and he's still like a little bird with the purees. I'm beginning to think he's a bit lazy :o)

We started off with chunkier purees and she took to them really well. We also gave her some puffs and cheerios to help her practice her pincer grasp.

My LO makes faces all the time but she still tries to grab the food. It might just be an adjustment thing. I guess keep trying. Does your LO push the food away or just makes faces?

Sorry gals! Had a meeting!

So, he can pick things up with his pinchers, but everything goes into his mouth EXCEPT food. It's like he doesn't realize that he should be eating this stuff. He'll put absolutely everything else in his mouth except for the bananas and avocado that we've mashed up for him. We'll put it in his mouth and he'll make a huge face...then try to get it off of his tongue. Really cute, but was just starting to worry that he will never like texture! Even the puffs he's not a fan of!

Thanks so much for the suggestions though!

Something like pear or banana or avocado has a squishier, smoother feel close to a purée. Our 8 month old loves pear & mango! He also likes soft crackers, like a grahmn cracker because he can gum it until its smooth (no teeth here either!)

You could try well done pasta or soft breads, like zucchini breads - those squish down without much effort. I think he might just need time to practice. You could give him a bit of finger food and let him "play" before doing a purée.

I would start by making chunkier purees so that he can get exposed to a little more texture. E wasn't really all that into finger foods before 9 months. I don't think you need to worry too much about it yet.

I would try soft things like avocado and banana. Those are mushy and slippery, though so if he doesn't like those foods, I would try puffs or mum mums. Definitely try foods with different consistencies to see if that is the problem.

Hmm what stuff have you tried? Do you think he's gagging on it or he just doesn't like the taste? Now that LO has gotten his pincer grasp down, we've done puffs and small pieces of strawberry, watermelon, chicken, blueberries, and cheese. Maybe some roasted/boiled cubes of a favorite veggie that you can then mash slightly between your fingers?

What kind of texture doesn't he like?

A ripe banana, avocado, baked sweet potato fries?

So, we've been doing a ton of purees for LO. He's about 8.5 months old, and I see that a lot of people do finger foods for their LOs much earlier than now. The thing is, when LO tries something that is a finger food, he immediately makes a face and tries to spit it out. He hates anything with texture. How do I get him to start eating things like this?

Not sure if it has to do with the fact that he also has no teeth! Any suggestions on good first finger foods to try with him that he won't spit out for texture issues??
