I agree with @Coco Bee BG 4.0 are one of our favorites. We weren't really happy with Fuzzibunz. We also like our Charlie Banana pockets (similar to FB but IMO nicer). I'm not a huge fan of the inserts though (they haven't held up well for us compared to other brand inserts like Thirsties and GroVia).

I would say 18 is a good amount to get started with. You may want to think about some night time options because BG never worked for us at night. I love Thirsties or GroVia Hybrid/AI2 for at night.

Also, we are getting by without a sprayer and just use liners. Anything that gets on the diaper we dump in the toilet or use a spatula to scrape off.

@Beebug: For a newborn, you want to use a newborn size. We used Green Mountain Diapers newborn sized prefolds (orange edge), but for the next baby I'm going to buy some GMD Workhorse fitteds in the newborn size. They're made out of the GMD prefolds, and are so easy to use. I LOVE them. Seriously love them.

You've had good advice so far.

I'd also add tiny spray bottles of water so you can wet the bum or the cloth wipes if needed. You can either use water, or make your own bum-wash solution....or you can splurge (as I have) on a pre-made solution. As soon as I got the spray bottle thing going on, I loved cloth wipes.

I agree with a lot of the advice you already got. If you have a smaller baby you'll get a much better fit using prefolds and covers (our one size diapers didn't start fitting well until 3 months). If you decide to go that route, my favorites were Green Mountain Diaper newborn prefolds with Thirsties covers.

About the sprayer, we have one and we love it! I have never had issues with poop spraying out of the toilet. (I had bought liners but never ended up using them because the sprayer worked so well for us).

Also agree with two pail liners, so that you have one when the other is in the wash. Good luck!

@MrsCB: Agreed about size of baby and perhaps not having enough that is small enough! I was able to pick up 9 Thirsties covers (like these: http://www.thirstiesbaby.com/products/cloth-diapers/diaper-cover/) for $40 from a Mom who is finished with them. They are in great shape, and now I need to figure out what prefolds are best! My issue/restriction is US shopping online for this stuff is so.much.better, getting things to Canada, the good deal is lost, I have done pretty well overall, so might have to suck it up for the prefolds.

@Coco Bee: agreed about the FB One Sizes, and that is why I am happy to have gotten the sized ones -hopefully will help in the leak department! Will look into those wipes!

@scg00387: I have looked on diaperswappers! Will keep on there too!

@c.sassy: For prefolds (now that I have enough covers, I think!) I sometimes see size options for the prefolds, anything you think works best?

@artbee: I bought a whack of washcloths (not offically baby washcloths, but small and workable!) on clearance at a department store today, and will continue to gather more!

@Mrs. Superhero: LOL your post is amazing! I have never used a sprayer before, I am thinking about the liner route to.

I thought I'd want a diaper sprayer, but apparently they can spray poo around your bathroom if you aren't careful? We went with flushable liners.

We ended up using baby wash cloths as wipes. I bought some real wipes but the wash cloths are cheaper and work the same.

We use a cheap diaper pail and it works great, you can also get a cloth pail liner to put in it and you just throw it in the wash with the diapers, so you want to buy two so you'll always have one in the diaper pail.

I've tried a lot of diaper creams and haven't had success with any. I switched detergents and then LO's diaper rash cleared up though..... so I'm hoping that stays.

Your diaper stash looks pretty good. We used a few prefolds and covers in a newborn size, but not much. I preferred disposables for the first month. However, I will say I LOVE my BG Elementals and I LOVE fitteds w/ covers. I would get 2 liners and at least 2 wetbags. Cloth wipes are so much easier when you're CDing. You could get ones specifically for cloth diapering, or you could use cheap, thin baby washclothes from Target or wherever. Or cut up a flannel receiving blanket. They will work just the same. We use the Grovia Magic Stick as our diaper cream and just use a disposable if we need something more substantial. And I buy most of my CD supplies from Green Mountain Diapers - LOVE them!

@beebug I am pregnant now but have done a tonnn of reading and research. I'd suggest searching Facebook for your local area to see if they have a cloth diaper group? I've enjoyed mine & diaperswappers.com

I've read Planetwise is best for wet bags, as someone else said above. Nicki's Diapers has them on sale right now - and if you're getting other things you can get the free gift, and look to see if they have any other coupon codes.

I've read great things, and bought, Earth mama angel baby balm and/or coconut oil.

I can't comment on sizing etc. -I am doing newborn prefolds & covers and then all one-size. I've read between 24-30 newborn prefolds, and then fewer as they get older.

One thing I've read a lot is some babies react poorly to microfiber - so I made sure to get some all cotton AIOs so we can try both.

Also google DIY diaper sprayer -that is what we plan to do!

@Beebug: you don't need a diaper sprayer until she starts solids. Our son just started solids, and so far we haven't used it because we just dump it in the toilet.

I think you're going to like the BG! They have become my favorite. DS leaks the least amount (hardly ever) in the BG's. We used FB (but they were OS) and didn't care for them, they leaked a lot. But the PS may be better since they are a set size. I hope they work for you!!

We got a garbage can from target for $20 that we used as our diaper pail, then bought the kissaluvs liner and the hoot liner on amazon.

We LOVE LVOE LOVE grovia cloth wipes. Best wipes ever!! They are really soft, absorbent and we've only ever needed one per diaper change.

As for creams: We've used several cloth diaper safe ones. Just make sure not to get the zinc oxide creams, or the white pasty ones.

I like the Earth mama angel baby too.

If you plan to CD from the beginning and end up with a medium sized or smaller baby you might find that what you have will be too big at first, causing leaks. You might want to try getting a couple of covers (like bummis or thirsties) and some inserts.

Thirsties are good because they have a 2 size system and the size 1s will get as small as sized newborn diapers, but will last longer. Bummis are sized, but I inexpensively priced.

With both of those you can either get inserts or prefolds and just lay them in the cover.

@Mrsbells: Definitely willing to try AIOs! Will look up the bottom balm!

@Mrs. Superhero: Ok about wet bag, I was going to see if hanging one worked for in the nursery rather than a pail or something to have in the room!

@Mr. Coco Bee: Ok about medium sizes! My thought on asking about prefolds/covers (or AIO's I guess!) is that they would top up the one size numbers especially when she is small! Not sure how big she'll be of course, and definitely planning on disposables the first bit and then transition into cloth! Also agree with the brand comment! These were made available to me at an exceptional cost (they cost about $22 each here, I paid $6-$8 and they're brand new) so I jumped on them, and definitely want to dabble with other options to best round out the stash!

Thanks so far.....really appreciate it!

PS. Diaper sprayer is something I forgot. Worth it? I know early days we won't likely use it, but when she's older?

You should be fine with any medium sizes, since you have the One-Size Diapers.
You should keep in mind that, if you are cloth diapering in the first few weeks you will need to change the baby up to 16 times a day.
We used the FuzziBunz AIO, but they were way too big when DS was first born.
I would imagine your small size and maybe the Bum Genius 4.0's will work the first few weeks. However if you are going to change about 16 diapers a day, you may not have enough to get you through the first few weeks, unless you want to do laundry every day.
We wound up using disposables the first few weeks because of this and also the first week or so the baby can have meconium poop, which tends to leave impossible stains in your cloth diapers.
You may want to try several different brands before sticking with one. What works for one baby may not work as well for another.

I second the earth mama angel baby bottom balm! We just use large wet bags on a hook. And I vote that cloth wipes are no extra work when you're already doing cloth diapers. I have no vote on you diaper stash as it's too different from mine, we only use applecheeks

Are you willing to try all in ones? we use Freetime all in one diapers by Bum genius, so we dont need covers plus inserts plus prefolds.

Planet wise makes great wet bags, I like theirs a lot and we just bought a large step trash can from walmart and thats what we use as our cloth diaper pail. we also just used seventh generation detergent. WIth regards to diaper creams not all of them are safe for cloth diapers. we currently use earth mama angel baby bottom balm

Hi ladies,

I think (hope!) I have a pretty good base stash of diapers started, but feel like I do not have enough that is small enough or mid size. I also only have the diapers, but know I need supplies to go with, so looking to know what I will definitely need, and/or definitely want to ensure we are ready to give CD'ing a go!

My base stash:

10 BumGenius 4.0 (One Size 8-35lbs)
8 Small FuzziBunz Perfect Fits (7-18lbs)
5 Medium FuzziBunz Perfect Fits (15-30lbs)
12 Large FuzziBunz Perfect Fits (25+ lbs)

All are currently stuffed with one insert, and I have 22 additional inserts (all are polyester based) that vary in size and brand.

I feel like I need flats or prefolds and covers at least to start? Help with sizing? They are what I am most familiar with using in the past (long time ago though). Am I right here? How many would I need?

I will likely use disposables at and just out of the hospital, and then transition to CD as soon as I can (no rush, just when the timing is right!)

Things we definitely need to purchase:
Liners
Diaper Pail/Bucket/Container of some sort for at home
Wet Bag for on the go
CD Detergent
Wipes (going to give cloth wipes a try, if not disposables)

Maybe want/need:
More diapers? Prefolds/Covers? More Fitted or AIOs?
Diaper Cream (reading lots of yes vs. no with cloth)
Bamboo Inserts?

Am I missing anything else?

You reading this is greatly appreciated!!!
