Yeah I agree people do feel a connection with celebs because we watch them on tv all the time and follow their lives and feel as if we know them

@rahlyrah: Agree 100%.

Addiction doesn't discriminate. It's all consuming, no matter how wonderful or terrible someone's life is. It destroys relationships, careers and pretty much everything else. So many people fall off the wagon because of the difficulty of just quitting. It's a disease.

It's sad when anyone dies as a result of addiction, but when a celebrity dies, it's often shocking. For one, people tend to feel a connection to celebrities they like even though they don't know them personally. Also, it's just depressing to see someone talented lose a battle like that. :(

I also feel like there's a certain generation mindset of "it won't happen to me." You see it a lot on Intervention (maybe a bad example).

My younger sister's boyfriend passed away 3 1/2 years ago (but it feels like yesterday in some ways). Long story short, he dabbled in painkillers (which my sister didn't know about). That combined with alcohol and an unknown heart disease/condition and he died in his sleep. I don't think they technically called it an overdose but that was a part of it. He was snorting RX painkillers and likely thought nothing would ever happen to him. Even one of his friends continued to do things like that afterwards. Not only did my sister have to grieve over his death but also the fact that he kept all of that from her. It was hard.

I think with Cory, it wasn't entirely the fame since the addiction predated that. Did it contribute to it and/or cause his release? Perhaps. And it's sad because it did seem like he wanted to get better... At least from our perspective. But, maybe Lea was the one who forced him into rehab earlier this year? I don't know. There's so much we don't know but it's terribly sad.

I also assumed it was from a drug overdose, but I was hoping that wasn't the case.

I don't know why it matters, but the fact that it was from Heroin just makes it worse. To me at least.

@MrsSCB: Exactly this!

I'm not sure the rate of celebrity/rich addition and avoidable death due to an accidental overdose is really any different the poor/poverished. It's just that those with names for themselves make our headlines.

In general I get really upset by the media attention celebrity deaths get and how people who don't personally know these individuals get so heartbroken over them. Yes, they are tragic and this young man had a lot of potential, but thousands of other people die every day for various reasons and besides their family and friends, it seems like their deaths go unnoticed by the general population.

@rahlyrah: Exactly. I come from a family that has struggled a lot/ is still struggling from alcoholism and it is TOUGH to kick no matter who you are. And so many times addiction is connected to things like depression, which definitely affects anyone regardless of how "happy" or successful they appear to be.

@MrsSCB: Yes!

I am the daughter of addicts and my stepmother passed away from a cocaine/heroin overdose a few years ago. Addiction is a nasty, all-consuming disease. My parents had money, four children, and a wonderful support system. The disease does not discriminate. A celebrity that suffers from addiction is no different than a soccer mom or a stripper that suffers from addiction.

In every case, it is a sad, tragic event.

I think in his case his disease got the best of him, he struggled before becoming famous with drugs, and started at the ripe young age of 13. Reports say he attended rehab twice before the age of 20. I think even though he really wanted to overcome this demon/disease but he wasn't able too. My heart breaks for his family because he really did want to get clean.

I think the money and people that want to please you when you are rich and famous makes it harder for addicts, but even "normal" addicts struggle and relapse. Having personal experience with addiction, both with my own addictions and with many of my family/close friends, I can say relapse can happen to anyone. It is always sad, and I have seen people die accidentally.

I assumed it was an OD from the start. With his history of addiction, it was almost a no-brainer, unfortunately. It's still a shame. Addiction is a terrible illness.

However, this is not an issue that is exclusive to celebrities. My MIL died of an accidental OD.

That's so sad and disappointing.

I have no idea why this happens to celebs, but we do need to remember that it happens to non-celebs all the time. They just don't get publicity for it.

I do feel awful for his family, friends, Lea, everyone. It's my understanding that his drug problems started well before he was famous. I think somewhere it said he was like 13 years old?

If so, he's been battling it for a while and addiction is very tough to break, even with a support system like he had. Everything I've read said that his acting and everyone he met as a result kept him on a sober path as much as they could but that he fell back into his old ways when he went home.

I guess in his case I don't see it as a result of being famous but that he has been battling addiction for years. I never watched Glee but I think it's sad that someone so young with such a bright future lost his fight with addiction, which is a tough battle.

I think a lot of money mixed with a lot of public attention/pressure can be a nasty combination. It really is so sad to see someone fall into drugs that way, and even worse when it takes a life. Celebrity or not, it is just so sad.

Addiction is a disease like any other, so I think celebrities suffering from it just shows that it can happen to anyone. Also Cory's struggles started long before he was famous. I'm curious if the rate of addiction among celebrities is any different than the general population or if it just feels like it more famous people struggle from it because they're in the spotlight and we always hear about it. I feel like sometimes people think that a famous person who succumbs to addiction is less sympathetic because they have it all -- money, talent, looks, etc. -- but I don't think that's fair. Everyone has their own struggles and being rich and famous doesn't mean your life is perfect.

I don't think it's about pressure. Having lived a life full of drugs & partying I think it's just recreational fun until its taken control. And, not that there are "smart" ways to use, but I'm always amazed at some of the combinations I see in those that accidentally od. :(

So they finally did announce yesterday that his death was as a result of an overdose of a combination of heroin and alcohol and they believe it was an accidental overdose. I was reading this previous thread http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/cory-moneith-aka-finn-from-glee-found-dead-wtf/page/2 and I read @MSLIPGLOSS post about how it is such a waste of a talented life. I feel bad for him and his family and Lea Michelle of course but I also feel like this is becoming almost normal with celebs to do drugs and sometimes accidentally overdose and die. In the recent past we have had celebs like whitney houston, michael jackson and others have deaths related to drug use/abuse and its so sad and yet frustrating why this keeps happening since it was in essence an avoidable death.

Of course I have never been rich or famous so I don't understand the pressures of that life. What are your thoughts?
