At our hospital they said that research shows the cord actually dries out better if you give them a real bath.....but honestly I was nervous about it, so I kept doing sponge baths til the cord fell off and then went to real baths the next day. They said they do sponge baths in the hospital just because they don't have baby baths there.

omg, I was so terrified to bathe him that he didn't have a real bath in a bathtub until he was over a month old. We did plenty of sponge baths though. Mostly hands and neck... and diaper area of course. :)

I think we waited 2 days after the cord fell off but that's cause my husband is risk-adverse and always "pads" things. haha. If you don't feel comfortable giving your LO a bath right away, there's no harm in waiting a few days just to be sure.

No advice here but I am super excited bc DD's cord fell off last night and I just realized I can give her a normal bath now after seeing this! Yayy! She's 2.5 weeks and has only had sponge baths to this point. I'll definitely be giving her a regular bath today.

We bathed our baby before the umbilical cord came off. In fact, I am pretty sure they bathed him in the hospital. Where I live, they don't counsel you to wait. Everything turned out fine.

I waited a couple of days because DS's bellybutton had a little bit of bleeding. I gave it a couple more days to heal and then gave him a bath. If it hadn't have been for the bleeding, I would have given him a bath right away.

DD's took a full month to fall out so I felt like it was dried up enough. I couldn't wait to give her a full bath at that point!

How soon after the umbilical cord fell out did you give your LO their first tub bath?
I know they say you can right afterwards but I feel like I should still wait a few days till the part on the belly button dries out??

THanks!
