Mrs. Checkers had her LO's 1st bday at 4pm in the afternoon and I thought that was perfect! Most kids are up from their afternoon naps by then... and you don't have to worry about the ones still taking their morning naps either.

I had mine from 11-1pm and that wasn't bad either because it's right after most morning naps and right before the afternoon nap. We had it at my house, and people did stay longer, so I was glad I was able to put her down right when I saw signs of tiredness while continuing the party.

Good timing, Junebug mama friend! We're just figuring out the best time for our son's 1st bday. We're having it at our house in CA in June, so the chance of rain is slim to none (knock on wood!). We do have enough space inside for the number of people we'll be inviting. Our biggest struggle is what time, since our son still doesn't have predictable nap times. We've landed on 1-4p, though, since he often naps around 11:30-1 at daycare. I also figure that would work with other people's kids' nap schedules so they can at least come before or after their naps.

Also, I'm doing a circus-ish theme, so having popcorn and candy available in the morning seems weird to me. I don't know what we'll serve yet, but grilling something or having mini-sandwiches and maybe an ice cream sundae bar sounds fun :) Haven't gotten to that part of the planning yet.

We're inviting about 40 people, though I'm guessing some probably won't make it. The mix includes grandparents flying in from out of town, as well as local friends and only a handful of kids. Really, the party is more for me and DH :)

We did a lunch birthday with burgers on the grill (August). It worked well but we only had about 30 people. I would limit it to around that number unless you are really going to go crazy and cater food and get a tent.

We're doing an afternoon party (starting at 3) so it's after afternoon naps, and hopefully it will wear all the kids down for bedtime. We're inviting mostly friends because our families are several states away, but it will still be about 60 people if they all come. Fortunately, we have a covered patio that can hold everyone if its rainy.

Our LO's party is going to be on July 20 (her birthday is July 18). We're thinking about 11-1 or 11:30-2 or something like that and serving lunch. LO seems to nap in the morning and then the afternoon but we'll probably set the time as it gets closer and we know for sure when she naps. We're thinking of having a lot of little sandwiches for everyone and then some fruit and vegetable trays plus maybe one or two other food items. And we'll have cake and I'd kind of like to have ice cream since it'll be hot but we'll see.

We're having it at DH's grandparents' house because it makes it easier for them to attend plus they have a large indoor and outdoor area. I know it'll be boiling hot in July so we figured the kids can play outside if they want to but everyone will still have the option to go inside (which also helps with rain).

@chrispygal: we are June 30th! I am having the same issue with morning vs. afternoon. I am now thinking 11-1 and making it a lunch...

I am so glad you posted this because we have the same dillema! Our thought was an afternoon, dessert only party because if we invite all our family, we're looking at almost 100 people. We don't have the space at ALL for this. LO's b-day is July 5th so we are hoping to have her party that Saturday and I guess our rain date would be Sunday. We were thinking an afternoon party but now LO seems to nap during that time, so it may be out and we may end up having to do it mid-morning to lunch time, which would mean we would need to serve more than just dessert. Ugh, I have no idea what to do.

We are starting to plan LO's first birthday and I am not sure what time I should do it. Morning? Afternoon? Brunch?

We are thinking of doing it at our house but it would have to be outside - so then there is the issue of rain. We canot fit everyone in the house if it does! We cannot spend the $$ on a tent ($350 at least).

Then there is the issue of just family or family and friends OR two seperate parties?

What are your thoughts? What did you do for your LOs first Birthday?
