I think small is better for a first birthday anyway. It's a lot happening for a little 1 year old so I'm sure the baby will be happier with a few people around rather than a big crowd. I think inviting your family is great, but no need to make it bigger or worry about not having enough people.

And I'm not even pregnant and I already worry about this! Our families live far enough away that coming for one day isn't really feasible, so I wonder how many people will come up and stay at a hotel or something just for a 1st birthday, even though I've travelled to my nephews.

Thanks @regberadaisy. That makes me feel better. It is still 3 months away, I just wasn't sure what I wanted to do.

@sugar: absolutely not! Like artbee said with less people you can probably go more all out with fancy seating cards and good food etc etc.

Like you both of our family are out of town and it's possible her first birthday party might be the two of us and two close friends. My ILs, mom and siblings plan to fly in but who knows? I'm still a planning fool 8 months in advance. :P

I always get a sense of anxiety around throwing parties. I was so anxious about my baby shower- I only had about 10 people.

Maybe I will just do a family only holiday dinner and invite one or two people. Is that lame?

Small parties can still be fun! Your lo is so young that she wont know that difference or play with the kids anyway. I also think small parties are nice because you can afford to go all out and spend more time and money on details. Its not so easy to do when you have a lot of people coming.

I think if you want to throw a 1st bday bash then throw one! Who cares if it's just the 3 of you or 30 people? It can be as fancy or simple as you want it!

So we moved to a new town a few months ago. I want to throw a 1st bday party, but we don't have enough friends to throw a party. Our LO is by far the youngest at Day Care, and I know the other kids have bday parties and invite the other little ones because they are all 3-4 and they interact. My MIL wants to fly in from TX for the 1st bday. But who do we invite to the party? My sister has a million friends and throws huge parties, so I feel this sense of comparison. They live close enough that they would come. So I have my MIL, my sister's fam, maybe my mom, and maybe 3-4 other people without kids to invite max.

I feel so lame not throwing a party, but I am not sure what to do?
