Definitely invite her as a guest - don't pay her for her time. That would get awkward real fast. I was a nanny for a long time and have been to all my nanny-kids' birthday parties and I love going because I love "my kids". She won't feel obligated to go, but I'm sure she'll both appreciate the invite, and also enjoy being there.

I was always invited as a guest and I never expected nor wanted payment. I wouldn't have accepted any; I love (d) "my" babies. Even though I'm no longer with that family I'm always still invited to many of their gatherings and I love being included.

I was invited to the girls' birthday parties as a nanny and thought it was nice to be included. I brought a gift and was treated like a regular guest.

Our nanny was invited and was very happy to come as a guest. She did end up helping with DS a little because she can't help herself, which was incredibly helpful, but we didn't pay her. We did send her home with lots of leftover food though!

@jmarionsmith: exactly this. I nannied a little girl for two years and was always invited, as a guest, to her parties. It was fun!

So I didn't invite E's in home daycare lady because I was concerned she might be so excited to see T, that she might shy away from family she doesn't see as often, because she looooves T. She leaps out of my arms to go to T in the mornings when I drop her off...

We invited our nanny to LO's first birthday party, but she declined as she already had a prior commitment. I definitely would not have paid her (she wasn't expected to be working) and would have treated her as any other guest.

When I nannied I was always invited to the kid's birthday parties as a guest. I never felt obligated to go and while there I was treated as every other guest was. Unless you are wanting her to work at the party (and have agreed to this ahead of time) I absolutely don't think you should pay her. :)

I am starting to plan my son's first birthday party. It will be on a Saturday. Our nanny works Monday-Friday. She is MORE than welcome to attend the birthday party but she is definitely not obligated. (1) If I invite her, will she feel obligated to attend? (2) If she attends, should I think about paying for her time? Will she feel like she's working? Or will she be offended that I am not treating her like a guest?

Honestly, I am ok with any of these outcomes, but am not sure what is SOP for this stuff. I just don't want to offend her.
