The hospital told me to estimate 1oz+ 1oz*age in months (round up). So for a 1 month old, 2 oz, for a 1.5 month old, 3oz. For a 3.5 month old 5 oz... etc. Has held true for my LO the times he took a bottle.

And ditto on the burp break--they get more air from bottles than boobies.

I think they say that it is 5oz per kilogram of milk for an entire day's worth. I usually had about 3-4oz worth of milk pumped for her.

I agree with above, take a break to burp when feeding.

Try to go slowly and take breaks with the bottle so he'll have time to feel full! Also, depending on who your caregiver will be, you can divide the milk up into small portions of have her do it, so you don't waste. When I went back to work at 2 months, my babe would eat 3 or 4 oz at a time.

Not sure if this is helpful but our pedi told us I should avoid giving the bottle and if I had to give the bottle, to hold the baby with his head on my knees, facing me, so he wouldn't be smelling me and my milk and get confused.

I think at 5 weeks I was giving my LO 4 ounces (when she got a bottle)?

I did a lot of trial and error when it came to feeding her. My bottle feeding/pumping days were short lived though because she went on a year long bottle strike. :P

Next time I would give him 3 ounces and see how he does. If he still acts hungry, try 3.5, then 4?

Sorry, not much advice here!

So I go back to work in 5 weeks, but due to some things I have to take care of during the day and LO's disdain for taking a bottle (the only time he ever had was in the hospital--had to supplement until he had a wet diaper), I wanted to try manually pumping one bottle a day until we got in the swing of things.

LO is 3 weeks old today. I pumped 2 ounces and he guzzled it in about less than 5 minutes. I literally couldn't believe it. It took about 20 minutes or so to pump the 2 ounces and I thought that would be close to plenty. He acted hungry still so I ended up feeding him an additional 10 minutes on one breast and 5 on the other.

Basically...for anyone who might have done the same thing or something similar...how do you figure out how much is too much or not enough? Any advice or expertise would be helpful! It's way more overwhelming than I thought it would be.
