We really loved using (cornstarch) baby powder from Johnson and Johnson with zinc oxide. Not only does it help with bouts of diaper rash, but we use it as a preventive measure esp when we change him before bed and he will be sitting in a soiled diaper for a long period of time.

@prettylizy: Hahha. This is exactly what I use! I also keep them in my diaper bag as a changing pad for short excursions when I think I probably won't need a diaper change, but just in case, it's in my bag. My regular changing pad is just bigger than my "diaper bag" (a purse that really isn't big enough to be a diaper bag).
I didn't think of them as being puppy pads--but now I know where to buy them! I got a bunch from the hospital to put in bed for lochia, but never needed them. I only have 4 left, so I'm happy to know I can find them at a pet store!

I second Dr. Smiths, it's challenging to find here. For some reason only the grocery stores seem to carry it (not at Target or BRU or BuyBuyBaby).

don't laugh, but we do naked time on puppy piddle pads and it's worked great! Whenever I see a little red spot, I put her down on her playmat with a puppy pad under her, and if she goes, it soaks up the mess and there is nothing to wash!
I also keep one in my diaper bag I case of a blowout, it's a good barrier for my diaper pad so it doesn't end up covered too. They're pretty handy.

Arbonne diaper cream!

And what they all said... diaper free, and wash the poop off in the bathtub or sink (just hold LO's butt under the tap)--no wipes needed.

Thanks all! I picked up some triple paste and we're going to try that ... Diaper-free time might be tricky with a mover and shaker like my LO, but we'll give that a shot, too. He already seems a bit better, thankfully.

Yes, I second what @cvbee said.....diaper-free time as long as possible outside. Doing this helped diaper rashes heal so much quicker!

I always miss my lo's poo's and I feel so guilty! I don't have a sense of smell and she doesn't complain about poops so unless I hear the grunting I have no clue.

No advice on diaper rash cream.... she's in cloth and I haven't found anything cloth diaper safe that I love yet.

Since you don't cloth diaper I recommend Dr. Smith's. It is a white tub with a blue top. It works awesome. I didn't care for Butt Paste personally.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Ah, wasn't sure. (We used to but don't anymore)
I LOVE Butt Paste. We use it all the time, it smells nice, and it works great for treating and preventing rash. Available in both a regular and all-natural form.

Butt Paste (it's really called that) is awesome, but is not CD-safe.
With CDs we used a spray- Kissaluv's Diaper Lotion Potion, but that was more for everyday use than treating rash.
(sidenote: I loved using a spray instead of a cream, nothing to get on my hands or LOs clothes if he squirmed!)

I guess I should feel good that we made it to 12 months without diaper rash, but I have a huge case of mommy guilt because I think it's my fault! Baby Y woke up around 11 last night whining, and I went in and nursed him (he usually wakes up once a night). There was a faint poop smell but I thought it was his diaper pail and not him (I had just fallen asleep myself and wasn't really thinking very clearly). So I didn't check his diaper.

Biiiiig mistake. At 4 this morning, he's up and there's no mistaking the smell, and when I changed him, he had a rash and cried and cried when I wiped :( Oh, and then he pooped two more times in the next two hours, so we got to repeat the process.

Mommy fail!!!!!

(On a side note, any recommendations for remedies/creams? Right now I'm using the generic Target destin-type stuff and it smells sooooo bad.)
