After buying a cute dress for LO to wear, we were informed they are to wear their Pre-K program shirt on the first day :( It's green and a bit oversized. Guess she'll just wear some old shorts or a skirt with it.

Ds1 starts a part time private preschool program in September and I'll probably send him in an outfit he already has! Maybe a polo for the first day but after that just normal play clothes. They have outdoor time 2x while he's there.

I don't, because my son also goes to a nature preschool and they're outside at least an hour a day.

I remember going back to school shopping with my mom, and picking out a few things for the new year, it was a nice thing to share and I would love to do it with my son, but I am not sure he's going to care!

My ODD starts a private pre-K program next week and she is going to wear a dress I had bought her before that she's only worn once to brunch. I have a weakness for fancy dresses and then she lives in shorts and tees :silly:

The dress she's going to wear is a really cute Lilly Pulitzer and my 3.5 month old has the matching set so I'll take their pics together and then she'll go to school in it:)

I think we will when she starts "real" school (kindergarten)-- this year, she's 3, and will be doing 2-day-a-week preschool for less than a half day. It's not really "school" to me quite yet. Plus, they're supposed to be in play clothes, like PPs have said.

We're going to start out homeschooling, but when/if she goes to school we'll do special first day outfits. But I'm not sure what we'd do if she were starting very young, when she'll be harder on clothes.

Thanks all! @MamaG, I think I'll take a page from your book and give her a selection to choose from. From the feedback, it sounds like practical play clothes (but maybe with a fun design!) is the way to go for preschool this year. Thanks again everyone!

We picked up a few new things since he's played hard this summer and stained quite a few things, but his preschool asks you to dress for fun. They paint a ton and he tends to come home dirty from the playground, so I don't send him in anything nice, ever. Last year was his first, and he got sent home in his extra clothes on the first day of school because they got so wet from the playground. But as he gets older, he'll definitely get a "1st day of school outfit" if he cares.

I will most likely do new outfits for first day of school. My parents always got me one until I was in highschool and wore a uniform, at which point I would get s new nail polish or something instead.

I think it's fun and adds to the excitement of the day (rather than dread/anxiety).

Yup, She's starting Pre-K at a new school in a few days. I just ordered her a new dress this morning. I let her choose from a few options and she picked my least favorite, but the cheapest one. And I believe she picked it because I said Daddy liked it. The real bonus was that she has shoes that already match. Win win win.

@Finfan: yes to this!

rarely will i send dd to school in her beet because i know they will be wild when they do get outside and they use markers and paint indoors with no coverup. play clothes are great, and sometimes on a rainy day or if they're having some kind of party or fun day, i might send her in something nicer.

I think a new outfit would be a fun way to document a new milestone! There's still quite a bit of sales going on for back to school so you might catch something on clearance or on sale.

DD will be going to a nature preschool, where they spend most of the day outside. So they specifically request the kids wear play clothes that can get good and dirty. We will probably send her in shorts and a T-shirt. She just did a daycamp there this summer and that's what all the other kids (most of whom go to this preschool) were wearing too.

Do you buy your little ones new first day of school outfits or just choose from something you have/buy secondhand? Most of my kids' clothes are things that have been handed down, bought on sale, or bought consignment but I was thinking it might be fun to do a back to school shopping trip to pick out first day of school outfits. Granted, it's only preschool and potentially full price items for a whole outfit is making me hesitate! What do you do for your first day of school outfit?
