Thanks ladies! If it's just to acquaint her with the dentist, I think we'll wait til she's 3. We've been brushing her teeth (when she lets us) so unless something looks suspicious, I think 3 is cool.

@pelikila: That was the main reason I took my daughter because she was refusing to let me get near her mouth but going to the dentist did help alleviate that fear. :-)

We'll be going at 1 year. To my understanding, it is more about getting them over the stigma of the dentist and making it fun than really getting a true checkup.

I didn't add my 5 month old to my dental coverage because my dentist said he would not need an appointment until age 3.

Typically we start seeing them at 3 for their first cleaning/exam ('m a dental hygienist). Unless they have some sort of cavity, that is the average age for their first dental apppointment.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children have a "dental home" by 1 and an exam. But to be honest, I have never seen a patient younger than 3 in the office and that is usually not the norm.

All the resources I came across said 1 year so I took my LO at 15 months. We have dental insurance so it was not a big deal to take her.

We're currently doing open enrollment for health benefits and I was trying to figure out whether we should get dental insurance for my LO who's gonna be 1 soon. To my surprise, my dentist and another in town said that unless we suspect something is wrong, my LO doesn't need to be seen til she's 3 years old. A quick search of the web shows mixed information. Some sites say the first appointment should be at 1 year and some say 3-4.

When was your LO's first dental appointment? or when do you plan to take him/her?
