They are just horrid. My son always seemed to get double ear infections after any illness. It has seemed like year one was the toughest with the most ear infections.
My lo always grabs at his ears even with no illness.

We've only dealt with this once, and she didn't display the classic signs people think of. Her sleep was ok (didn't cry when I lowered her, but I could hear her toss and turn), she didn't monkey with her ears. But she was clingy, ran a persistent fever, and was worn out. Hope your LO makes a quick recovery!

We're battling my 8 month old's first ear infection now, and it is horrible! The only way I knew was that her fever suddenly spiked to 104.7-104.9. Before that, she was pretty fussy and had a low grade fever, but she has a tooth coming in, so I didn't think too much of it.

She was diagnosed with a left ear infection on Sunday, began flat out refusing all liquids on Wednesday, went back to the dr, and now has a double ear infection. We got a stronger antibiotic on Wednesday, and she finally seems to be getting better.

I'm sorry! They do suck! The telltale sign with DD was the super high fever. She's had fevers with other viruses but it was never that high so I pretty much knew. She didn't have any other symptoms either like pulling on her ear, etc.

My son's ear infections came on after he had a cold. So if he had a cold, I'd know to expect an ear infection afterwards. I'd know when he would get a fever and glassy eyes.

They can come on quickly and it's pretty common for them to come after a few days of illness, or even once it seems like they are recovering from previous illness. The only telltale sign for us is extreme crankiness that we can't distract her from. Usually when she's sick she will still want to play and generally act like herself. With an ear infection she is just irritable to the extreme!

@macintosh: I'm so sorry  I'm glad you went this long without one! It's actually very common (in my circle of mom friends, too) to take DD in, suspecting an ear infection, and have nothing. Two days later, raging ear infection.

You will start to have Spidey sense when it comes to ear infections. My kid doesn't get a fever, but she sleeps like crap (laying down builds up pressure in their ears), is grouchy (normally very easy going), etc.

We've had 12-14+ ear infections, tubes now but still get ear infections. I hope this is a fluke for you guys :goodluck:

Yeah for us it's a sudden high fever in the MOTN that we can control with Advil, but as soon as the 6 hours is up and the meds wear off, it spikes again immediately. Two days of that in the 101-102 zone and he always has an ear infection.

I always know because he runs a high fever. Like 103+. He's never had a fever that high without getting an ear infection. He's only complained one time and it was this last one because it was bad enough they were certain his eardrum would rupture. He gets one like every other month during the school year.

+1 to the extra crankiness with laying down! I felt like he was basically awake the entire night from fussing. That sucks you had to take him twice though : /

The first time my LO had an ear infection, it got so bad her ear drum ruptured before we saw the doctor. I felt terrible for not catching it earlier. Our main clue is she gets crazy and cranky and tantrums all the time, and often her sleep gets worse (but her sleep is often weird anyway). She is 2.5 and very verbal and still says her ears don't hurt when I ask.

Recently she had her well visit and our pediatrician looked in her ears and told me she had some fluid but it was not infected, so they wouldn't treat it, but watch out for an infection later. I thought she was fine then she had the worst behavior week ever, brought her in, double ear infection. :bummed: I'm finally starting to get better at just trusting my instincts even if she doesn't have the signs you read about (she has never tugged on her ears for one).

@petitenoisette: Same for us, the laying down was the clue! He would fight and cry at bedtime and diaper changes when laid on his back. He didn't show any other symptoms that I was on the lookout for - fever, ear pulling, eye gunk, etc.

We never knew until they got bad enough for her to have gunk in her eyes. My Lao handled them like a champ so no fussiness and she never ran fever. Her very first one was SO bad by the time it was caught, our pediatrician could not believe how happy she was.

Mine has only had one and I didn't know either. We went in because we thought she had conjunctivitis. We ended going back two more times before we got it cleared, so I feel you on the copays!

In retrospect, the sign for her was her sleep being insanely terrible. She was pretty happy during the day but lying down can make them a lot more uncomfortable. She had a particularly bad night of sleep the other night and if it had happened again I would have taken her in to check for her ears based on the first experience. Thankfully her sleep is back to normal.

I hope your LO feels better fast! Pro-tip, if they didn't tell you already you might want to start a probiotic bc the antibiotics can do a number on his digestive system. But don't do like I did and give them same time as the antibiotics :silly: You have to do it separately.

I think either the ear infection came on overnight or your NP didn't know what she was doing. I never know when my LO ha an ear infection. They say if he tugs at his ears a lot that's a sign. This last time DS has a lot of excess ear wax. Usually it's caught because we go to the doctors and we see a doctor who notices it and gives us antibiotics.

Crap, my 11 month old has an ear infection. It came seemingly out of nowhere, but now I'm wondering if I could have seen it coming if I knew what to look for. He started off with a sudden high fever and then a runny nose the next day. Then he was so sick that he could barely sleep. There was so much crying. He's finally getting a bit better.

The most annoying part was I took him to the dr. on Tuesday after he had a fever 2 days in a row. He actually saw a nurse practitioner and she said it looked like a virus and his ears looked ok. When he still had a fever on Wednesday, they suddenly were concerned and wanted me to bring him back in. He saw doctor this time and and bam: double ear infection.

I know docs are hesitant to give antibiotics unless they know for sure they are needed, but man I had to haul my sick kid to the dr. 2 days in a row and pay 2 $30 copays!

For those of you that have LOs with recurrent ear infections, how do you know when it's just a cold and when it's something more?
