@msginkgo: we were told 6-9 months and it's been 8 for us. It feels longer because before they sent the referral we had to get all this blood work done so to wait a few weeks for my cycle to reset... it feels like it's been forever. I'm just glad I called because who knows how much longer we would have waited.

I am hoping we won't have to do IVF.

@Umbreon: I had hoped we might have other options (IUI) but it sounds like based on the information she has now IUI won't increase our odds much at all. IVF is just so expensive and I don't know if that's in our budget at the moment.

WE were told 6-8 month wait, our appointment was just after 5 months waiting.

@msginkgo: Thanks for the update. Did you think IVF would be your best option going in?

I don't really have any idea what they will suggest to us. On the plus side we finally have an appt on Feb 14th! I am so happy I called. They told me they would contact me "in a few months, hopefully" at first which was very discouraging but called back later and said they could actually book me! It's been SUCH a long wait.

So the appointment went well.

They were late as expected.

She went over our paperwork, asked questions, ordered a lot of tests. She’s very blunt, but indi don’t mind that.

She did imply that IVF is our best option based on the currently available information.

I have CD3/4 blood work scheduled for Monday, DH is having a FSA on Friday and hopefully I’ll get in for my HSG next Friday. Terry only do them on Friday’s and sometimes it can take a couple months to get in.

@MrsSK: thanks. We were told it would be a long wait since we're young. I called our family doctor and they told me to call the clinic. I will call again Monday if I don't hear back from them.

@msginkgo: I wish you luck though. If you can come back and let us know how it goes that would be great.

@msginkgo: honestly whenever I have to meet with the doctor I plan for a longish wait... it's never been fast and my clinic also books 30 minute intervals. It's a bit annoying for figuring out how much time to book off work, but luckily I haven't see the doctor very often. Most appointments are with a nurse or just for bloodwork/ultrasounds and those have always been pretty quick.

@Umbreon: no, we didn't have to do anything beforehand. Our experience was my family doctor made the referral and a few weeks later the clinic called to set up an appointment for our first meeting. At that meeting, the doctor gave us the requisitions for the blood work plus a few other tests we had to do at the clinic. They did an unmediated monitoring cycle while we did the tests. About six weeks later we went back for our follow up with the doctor to review the results and discuss next steps.

@Umbreon: I am almost guarantee that they will make you repeat everything... its annoying but even when we switched clinics they made us repeat all the previous testing. They all want it done at their own lab or with their specific instructions. I would call you family doctor as well and see if they received any response when they sent your referral, just to make sure

@msginkgo: I am in Ontario and similar to others, it took about 2 months or so to get through all the testing and stuff that they wanted before we were able to start with any treatments. Even though they book 30 minute time slots I would say to anticipate the appointment being at least an hour long. They will probably review all your forms, talk to you about any other health issues you or your partner may have and explain the different treatments that are available. Then they will probably discuss testing they want done and provide you and your partner requisitions and instructions for when/where to get everything done.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

@MrsSK: did you have to do blood work before getting the appointment as well?

We had to get blood work along with some other tests done along with the referral. So im just curious if it was the same process.

@msginkgo: in regards to charts, my doctor appreciated I had them and could speak to patterns but she didn't actually want to see them. My first visit was a long consult and a physical with a transvaginal. I was able to start my other testing immediately after and actually had a treatment cycle the same cycle bc due to PCOS and my hormone levels being CD 3 at CD 10 or so.

@Umbreon: charting Is automatic now, I barely think about it, it definitely annoyed me at first. That said, if they tell me I can stop I probably will.

@MrsSK: I have a ton of paperwork we have to fill in before we go. A lot of history and whatnot. I’m assuming this is going to be a ‘this is what we need to do to get started’ appointment. They had availability at 10, 10:30 and 11 so I’m assuming it won’t be long.

Similar to others, our first appointment was basically paperwork about family and medical history for both me and DH and an overview of the process. I was able to book my CD3 monitoring at that appointment since my period had just started. We also got requisitions to do blood work that we were able to do at any lab. Our clinic didn't ask for any charts.

I'm also in Canada, and our process has luckily been fairly smooth and fast. We had our first appointment in September and just completed our second IUI.

@msginkgo: can you post back after your appt? I actually called our fertility clinic today since our stuff was sent in June And we haven't heard back yet.

They did not answer so I left a message and hope to hear back next week.

I'm curious how your appt will go. I'm in Canada as well. We've gone for blood tests, SA for DH, ultrasound for me, etc. I hope we don't have to do it all again...

I stopped charting because it's annoyingand I feel I have a good idea of O without it so I'm curious about that too.

Similar to others as well: questions, requisitions, maybe a pelvic exam. And yes it takes a long time to get all the preliminary testing done. And then to schedule the follow up to discuss, then to actually start the treatment. That’s the part that drove me the most insane so just be prepared even though you’re probably already feeling anxious to get started right away. For example, we had a consult for our second child in May, started IUI in August, December IVF (and that’s considered pretty quick for Ontario)

Pretty much what PP said. I wanted to add to be prepared for a physical exam as well.
During my first fertility appointment my doctor did a physical on me, including ultrasound (but I also had suspected, then confirmed PCOS, so that part might be different for everyone?).
I went in December and started meds during my cycle in February, I found that to be fairly quick.
We were sent out for bloodwork and semen analysis.

Welcome!
Your first visit will just be a lot of questions - medical history, family history, etc. They may draw blood at the first appt or schedule you to come back for it.
They’ll probably have you sign a bunch of paperwork.
They may schedule future appointments for testing that isn’t able to happen tomorrow - for example a sperm analysis for your husband, day 3 testing for you, saline sonogram, etc.

In my experience it’s a somewhat slow process before you actually get going. I went in knowing I needed IVF with PGD. And even knowing exactly what treatment was needed it was still about 2 months each time before it actually started. First time I went in Early October and started meds in late November (like the 26th). Second time (for LO2) I went in Ealry/mid July and didn’t start meds until early sept.
So I would be prepared that it might take a couple months to get started (just depends).

Good luck!

Hi!

I’m new here. We’ve been TTC for a little over a year now.

We finally have an appointment with a fertility clinic on Monday and I’m super nervous!

I’m almost 35, DH is about 6 months from 36. Both in reasonably good health...

Can anyone tell me how their first visits went? Anyone who went to AART in Halifax NS gets bonus points :)
