@Mrs. Milk: Thank you for suggesting a blanket-I definitely wouldn't have thought of that. We have one he loves so having that piece of home will hopefully enhance his experience. As an aside, I love that you're blogging on Hellobee-I've been a reader of your personal blog since you got married and I love your writing style. You once put up a recipe for homemade oreos that I still make today and people love them. So...thanks!

This is all great advice- definitely wear if you can, and I agree about bringing some milk just in case. Just let security know what it is and they will use a special wand for it.

I'll add (didn't see above?) to nurse during takeoff/landing and whenever you feel your ears pop. That's what makes most babies sad on flights.

I'd also maybe bring a small blanket? It can get cold and the airline blankets aren't necessarily the cleanest.

Good luck - you'll rock it!

@NorCalWayfarer: Thanks for the awesome tips-I'm planning on bringing two bottles and my nursing cover! He can suck on whatever he wants if it will keep him calm:-).@nana87: Thanks for this perspective-I'll give the stroller a test run with the stuff I'm bringing and see which I like better!@Foodnerd81: I'm planning on doing this! Also because in case he wants to spend the entire flight nursing, I want to have a little back up for when I arrive:-).@Ree723: Wow, your trip makes mine look pathetic in comparison! You're my hero! Glad it went well.@Beth24: Ooo-the noise on the plane! When he was really little he'd always conk out in restaurants-loved the ambient noise. Maybe the plane will have the same effect?!

I nursed DD (6 months old) when we were taking off and had a bottle for her when we started the descent. She napped on both flights in between feedings - worked great for me! I'm glad I had the bottle because she loves her bottles and my flight was only 2 hours so I didn't know if she would get enough milk if I nursed her again. DH wore her in the airport for the first flight and then we bought a cheapie umbrella stroller for the flight home. She loved being able to look around at all the action going on so I preferred using the stroller. I also used a book bag instead of her regular diaper bag and liked the convenience of that. I was so nervous to fly with her but she did really great! The noise on the planes seemed to soothe her.

Definitely wear the baby, use a backpack for your carry on, and maybe take a small purse so you have easy access to your money and phone whilst at the airport without having to dig in your backpack. I haven't read all the comments so it may have been mentioned already, but another perk of the backpack over a suitcase is that you can have it under the seat in front of you, thereby giving you easy access to everything you need.

To answer your later question, I did not bring any pumped milk. If DD needed to nurse more frequently, it was more for comfort than because she needed more milk than I had produced. I also am not squeamish about nursing in public so I had no issues nursing in my seat.

I flew from the US to England (an 8 hr overnight flight) in July, by myself with our then 5 month old and 25 month old, and lived to tell the tale. It was actually fairly easy - I wore DD2, bought a travel car seat and the roller attachment for DD1 so I could wheel her around, and had a backpack and my diaper bag. It was a struggle getting on/off the plane but everyone was so incredibly kind and helpful, and that made it so much easier. Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine! :-)

I guess I'm alone in this, but I prefer to use a stroller at the airport, using it to lug bags as well as carry baby, and then babywear on the plane (gate check the stroller). My baby is little but I have a hard time wearing her and carrying stuff, even just a diaper bag, I feel so weighted down.

I agree with all of the advice to babywear! And to bring a smaller diaper clutch so you don't have to haul your whole diaper bag around to change him. Bring a a few toys/teethers on the plane too and use toy straps if you have them (tie to your carrier, etc). My LO also LOVES that crinkley-sparkley wrapping tissue stuff and it's super easy to pack/cheap if you lose it. LO is BF but I found it easier to give a bottle on the plane than BF because he was too distracted to BF.

@blackbird: 3.5 hour direct flight. Awesome idea on the back pack!@Littlebit: that sounds perfect-I thought it'd be doable as long as I wore him. Fingers crossed!
@Mrs.Someone: oh yes, my son looooves his pack so he'll have one attached to him and about 5 more accessible  . Also planning on letting him nurse as much as possible to help his ears and keep him from screaming!
@lamariniere: thankfully it is direct-we have a layover for our July trip but hopefully my husband will be with me to haul everything!
@theotherstark: that July trip best be to SoCal
@SweetiePie: thanks for chiming in! Glad I don't have to haul the car seat-it will make everything easier. I won't need a stroller for anything but the airport so it sounds like wearing him is the way to go!
@Foodnerd81: I use gallon ziplock for everything-awesome idea! He loves being worn so I'm hoping he'll be content to hang out and snooze in there for most of the flight.

Thanks all for weighing in! It sounds like you've all been there and lived to tell the tale, so I'm hoping we have a smooth journey. Breastfeeding moms-did any of you bring pumped breast milk along for some back up? Trying to decide if having extra on hand is worth the hassle...

@ChiCalGoBee: does your baby like being worn and are you comfortable with it? If the answer to both is yes, then I say wear him! C loved being in her carrier when we flew at that age and we ended up using the stroller to put other bags in, but it was both of us there. But I wouldn't use the airport as a place to see if you like babywearing.

Make sure your carryon fits under the seat in front of you. Pack a smaller bag with just changing essentials (wipes, pad, couple of diapers) and stick it in the seat back so you don't have to bring the whole diaper bag to the bathroom for changes. (I'm fancy and use a gallon zip lock).

Like others I liked dressing her in a zippered footed sleeper for flying.

Wear him, check everything but the diaper bag, no stroller! That's my advice!
I did exactly what youre doing when mine was 3.5 months. Dragged a car seat and a huge diaper bag on the plane while wearing him. Regret the carseat big time and wish I hadn't taken such a large diaper bag (it was one of those big ll bean totes).
Next time we travel my husband will be with me, so we may still take the car seat since we bought him his own seat. Going to check everything but the diaper bag and probably wear him. If we do take any stroller it'll be a snap and go or an umbrella stroller.

Sounds like you're set up pretty well! Definitely wear at the airport, makes it easier to haul bags. Bring a paci if your baby takes one, and several changes of clothes. I liked using sleepers so you don't have to worry about loosing socks or finding parts to an outfit. Ask the flight attendant if there is an empty seat you can sit next to. We flew to S America when DS was 4mo and it wasn't too bad.

I would wear! I flew last week with my 6 month old and being able to wear him was a lifesaver. I used a backpack as our personal item, and then also had a rolling carry-on. Wasn't an issue!

I think wearing is so much easier. How long is your trip? I would probably bring a backpack (as a diaper bag, packed with everything else i could need) and a small roller bag if it was just a couple days (cuz i could just do laundry at my parents' house). You get to board early with a baby, so you shouldn't have too many problems getting overhead luggage space.

My husband and I are flying home to visit my family for the Passover/Easter weekend, so that we can introduce our baby to everyone. My son will be just under 5 months at the time. Turns out my husband will have to come out later due to work, so baby's first flight will be with just me and I'm a little bit terrified! Hoping for some advice on those who have traveled solo with an infant....

*A crib will be ready and waiting for us so I don't need to bring a PnP
*Infant carseat will be installed in the car when we arrive
*Diapers/wipes will be waiting so I'll only bring diapers and a few changes of clothes for the flight
*A breast pump will be there so I only need to bring a few parts to go along with it

Should I bring a stroller for the airport(s), or do you think wearing him is the best option? Is bringing a roller carry-on feasible, or am I dumb for even thinking I can manage that and should plan on checking a bag? Any other general tips? Thanks in advance!
