Baohaus is my favorite for a cheap lunch, and it's right near the Strand- the best bookstore in the entire world. If you are uptown, try the Cloisters Museum (super beautiful gardens and church architecture) and the Studio Museum (contemporary African American art in Harlem). If you are in town on the weekend, eat brunch at Kitchenette near Columbia University or go to the Brooklyn Flea Market.

@gotkimchi: get an hour long foot rub in Chinatown for cheap after some dim sum.

And eat a cookie from Levain, and the mushroom burger from Shake Shack if you want something cheap and good.

Sleep in and eat a boozy brunch. =)

Since you'll be child free there are a couple of rooftop bars you can hit up at night. Great views with cocktails, can't beat that!
230 Fifth is one of them. It's been around forever and not really "hip" anymore but people still go for the view of the Empire State Building. It's like you can reach out and touch it.
Also the Top of the Strand is a cooler/more modern rooftop bar. And they have a retractable roof in case the weather isn't great. Also great views of the ESB and the Freedom Tower. Both are expensive but if you go for one drink and the view it's worth it.

Central Park is beautiful in the spring. Cherry Blossoms and such.

I second the Highline. Very cool in the spring and if you start at the top (30th street I think) you end in Meatpacking which has great shopping and restaurants for lunch. Also, Chelsea Market is along the Highline and there's a great taco place inside.

Agree Staten Island Ferry is a great cheap way to see the Statue of Liberty without all the hubbub.

If you are a historical buff there's a company called Big Onion Tours and they do some great walking tours. We've done the Central Park history tour and the Gangs of New York tour. They also have food and cultural tours (LES Tennements, LES food/melting pot). It's a 2-ish hour commitment but in the spring it's a great thing to do. We live here and enjoy going on them.

If you want specific restaurant recos let me know. Id rather list those out on my laptop :-)
But one I can't recommend enough is called Casa Brazil in the West Village. Super authentic and amazing Brazilian food (not the all you can eat Churrascaria, a regular sit down). It's not fancy but it's one of those classic West Village neighborhood gems and you can stroll around after and get some authentic gelato, live music, etc

You'll be staying near Rock Center so you can easily walk over to Fifth Ave and see all the fancy stores if you're into that.

Personally, I wouldn't want to trek to Brooklyn with only 3 days. There's too much to see in Manhattan. (But I'm lazy).

If I think of anything else I'll update!

I like MOMA over the Met because it is not an entire day commitment.

Museum of Natural History

A Broadway show- there are a couple 1/2 price day of ticket booths- if you don't have a show in mind. More popular ones like Wicked you can't find on discount. We saw Rock of Ages.

9/11 memorial.

Walk over the Brooklyn bridge.

Oh and the Top of The Rock is better for views- then you can see the Empire State Building. And the viewing areas are less cramped.

@gotkimchi: oh the definitely go to Brooklyn Botanical Gardens to see the cherry blossoms! Hopefully you'll get the warm weather we had earlier this week! You'll be centrally located where you are staying.

I'll probably start a debate, but go to Arturo's on Houston street for the best coal oven pizza and live jazz music. Since your child free, I recommend sitting at the bar and enjoying! Also it's located on the soho/west village border so lots of good people watching and strolling options.

When are you going and where are you staying?

-Central Park
-Brooklyn Botanical Garden
-See a Broadway show
-Avoid Times Square... Seriously
- eat, eat, eat
- get lost walking around the West Village
-shop in Soho
-Staten Island Ferry or other cruise might be fun
-MOMA and the Met

I lived in NYC for 10 years and grew up and live right outside the city and I've never "seen the sights". I've never been to the top of the Empire State Building... to me NYC is all about culture, food, and parks!

All of that sounds amazing. What part of town are you staying in? The high line park on the west side is really cool and there are art galleries around there as well.

Also leaving from lower manhattan the Staten Island ferry is free and you get a view of the statue of liberty and if you drink, you can byob on board! then hang out in battery park.

Have a blast!

Endless options! I always go for art museums and theatre, but you could easily spend the day just checking out neighborhoods and stopping by interesting shops and cafes/restaurants. Apart from Musuem mile, the new Whitney is beautiful, I love the Neue Galerie, and the Brooklyn Musuem is great if you're interested in leaving Manhattan. If you want to see something on Broadway I'd stop at the TKTS booth to pick up discount tix the day of. The burlesque shows at The Slipper Room are also a lot of fun!
