@mrbee: thanks for pulling all the posts together. I have been making sure to read those but I would like to re-read now that we are here.

So last night she cried around midnight. DH got up and said as soon as he put his hand on her back she settled back in and was asleep again in her big girl bed. She woke up at 5:30 and cried for him to come get her.

Tonight she wanted me to lay next to her but I said no and just had to say prayers sitting next to her. She was looking around a bit with me there but eventually drifted off and was happily asleep!

I would definitely not confuse things and stick to the bed. If my daughter ever wakes up, I never lie in her bed, but I might agree to read her one more story in order to get her back down. Then I leave and there have been a few nights where I am in and out of her room a number of times, but it is worth that initial pain in order to get them adjusted quickly and not dependent on you for sleep.

@Bao: We used to be so so tired when putting Charlie down that we'd always fall asleep during the bedtime routine... he would love that and push for us to stay in his room every night.

In addition to preventing that though, it can also just be good to set a boundary that the bed(room) is just for him to sleep in... and that we're there to put him down, and then to leave. We talked to one child psychologist who suggested that we move Charlie's storytime to another room, so that he associates his bedroom with sleep. He also suggested that we use a dim lamp in his bedroom (instead of the bright overhead light bulbs), which we did... and wow, that helped a lot!!

@T.H.O.U.: I agree!

Bee blogged about our experience transitioning Charlie to a toddler bed... it didn't go so well:
http://www.hellobee.com/2012/04/03/transitioning-to-a-toddler-bed-what-not-to-do/

Mrs. Train also had a less than ideal transition:

Mrs. Hide & Seek and Mrs. High Heels had the most success!
http://www.hellobee.com/2011/12/07/big-girl-bed/

@mrbee: Interesting, I've never heard that before...can I ask why? LO isn't in a big girl bed yet, but it's always good to keep things in mind for the future.

Sounds great!!

One tip I heard is to never lie in bed next to your kids... you can sit next to them and read from there. Wish I had heard that one before Charlie decided he loves it when I lie down in bed next to him to read his books!

@Rubies: do you have the new bed set up yet? I was going to wait until she was officially two but we got the room set up and she really likes it. I figured while its still a novelty I will let her try to sleep there.

She loved going in there to read books (I laid next to her) and then I turned off the lights and said prayers. I then crawled out of bed and sat next to her on the floor with my hand on her until she fell asleep.

My sweet girl (22 months old) is asleep for the night in her big girl room. I stayed in there with her until she fell asleep so I'm not sure what shell do if she wakes up in the middle of the night. I am going to leave a night light on for her with the monitor.

If she gets up should we try to put her back down in the big girl bed or move her back to the crib? She wanted to sleep here tonight and went down easily but I wasn't really ready to transition so I'm not sure what our "plan" should be.
