@Arden: I agree that chatting with the doctor about other stuff is helpful. It is less uncomfortable if you're relaxed, so even talking about the weather might help.

Totally agree with artbee - if you chit chat a little through it it's fine - maybe tell your doc this is your first one and she can explain everything.... I can't even count how many I have had at this point, but they are quick (albeit a little uncomfortable) but it doesn't hurt, and I always liked getting the peace of mind that all was good down there!!

It's definitely uncomfortable, but it's over in a few seconds. You're going to want to tense up and clench your .. everything, but it's easier if you just breathe and stay as relaxed as possible. Good luck!

I always talk to my doctor about completely unrelated things, or spend the time asking questions. Makes it less awkward I think.

While it is awkward, I have never had any pain during a pap smear. It's also very quick. The routine at my doctor is the nurse shows me into an exam room, I undress completely and put a robe on, my doctor comes in and opens the top of the robe to do a breast exam. She only takes a minute or two at most. Then she closes it back and performs the pelvic exam. That also only takes a couple of minutes. The worst part to me is the lubricant that she uses to insert the speculum. I have to go home and shower right after because it is so thick and I feel gross.

My husband and I are in the pre-TTC stage, hoping to start actively trying in June. I've been on prenatals for a couple of months, got to my ideal weight, got blood work and a urinalysis done, cut coffee down, etc.
All I have left is a dental check-up, and a pelvic exam/PAP smear.

Here's the thing - I've never had one.

I got married a year ago at age 21, and before I got married I wasn't sexually active and my doctor told me I didn't have to get one.
So I'm a little nervous about the whole thing. I know every woman has done it, many times, and it can't be THAT big of a deal, but I'm still a little bit freaked out.

Does anyone have any advice, what to expect, etc?
