thanks for your replies ladies, it looks like it could go either way - heavy or light! At the moment I'm on day 2, but its not very heavy at all and no cramping. My pre-baby periods were 5 days/heavy for 2, lots of cramping and PMS. Hoping that its a quick and easy one, baby is still nursing 5 or so times a day so I hope this period effs off for a few more months!!

mine came back just shy of 4 months. The first one was pretty crazy. It also hurt my pumping supply and I needed to nurse more often. Making sure I was drinking and eating lots was also helpful.

Be gentile with yourself. It's a lot to have AF and nurse.

Mine came back with a vengeance around 11-12 months while I was in the weaning process. Or at least, I was weaning from the pump. The first 2 days are like a massacre and then it tapers off. I'll be honest, I have to wear Depends to bed those first few nights b/c even the large pads don't contain it. I really hope this isn't my new normal as I'm 3 periods in and there's no sign of letting up.

Curious about this myself. I'm 15 months pp (& still bf about 4x per day) and just went off the mini pill 2 days ago. I spotted for more than a week last month, so I felt like it was coming back then, but that was it. Expecting a real AF now after stopping the pill, but not looking forward to it. My periods before LO were very light, but it's been so long, I at least think this 1st one pp could be really heavy. :bummed:

I got mine at 13 months PP. DS started daycare at 12 months, and I went down to breastfeeding only in the morning and before bed, so I'm sure there was a correlation. The length was pretty normal, although the first two days were a little heavier than normal. I've had regular periods (3), before recently getting pregnant again.

I had weeklong spotting while EBF once when my LO was 11 months old. I didn't see anything again until I had stopped pumping when my LO was 14 months and then it was like the end of days down there pretty much every month until I got pregnant again 8 months later.

My first one came around 11.5 months (right as I started pump weaning during the day at work) and was pretty light. The next few cycles were super long (like 40+ days) to the point where my doctor wanted to test my thyroid. Those were pretty light too. I think it took close to 6 months for them to become more normal.

I got pregnant the first time I ovulated bit had a chemical, which was lighter than a normal period. My LO was 16 months. Then I had my first period when she was 18 months (still breastfeeding at least 4 times a day); it was also lighter than my normal period.

I got mine at 7.5mo pp. It wasn't terrible. It was lighter than I thought it would be. They got heavier after that for awhile (I would say a good 8-10 cycles) and then lightened back up a little bit. haha. FWIW, I don't believe I ovulated before my first period or the the first cycle after that. So maybe that is why it was lighter.

Mine came back around six months (womp womp), right after I transitioned from nursing to exclusively pumping. No idea if it was correlated, but it may have been! I definitely spotted a bit, and then, well, it was a HEAVY first period, FYI. :)

DD - AF visited me when she was like 3 or 4 months old. WTH!? I was pissed. lol. It came back like it was never gone. Maybe slightly heavier the first couple of days than normal, but length wise, it was the same.

@fannymae I just got my first PP period a few weeks ago. DS is 12 months and EBF the whole time. It was very light, only lasted like 3 days.

... that being said, I had light periods before I got pregnant and had fertility issues which may have been causing it, so IDK if it's normal.

E is EBF and I got my first PP period at 3-4 months. It was very similar to my periods before, maybe even a touch lighter. And way less cramping. I used to have horrible cramps but now I just pop and Advil and I'm on my way.

@avivoca: yes the mega thick 1980's maxi pads the size of a mattress. I used those when I had my first post partum period with DD1, it was major heavy intense bleeding.

@misolee: I wonder if mine does come now if it will be regular or up and down with timing. I can imagine that feeling of hmmm I'm late... but am I? haha

@Mrs. Goose: I've been mild cramping for a few weeks, some bloating and tenderness, and then spotting for a day then nothing for a few days then spotting again. Today it has been no cramping, but a very light period, nothing more than a light ultra thin pad needed. I'm wondering if the on and off spotting and light period has been due to increased feeding (LO has had a bit of a booby appetite today)

Weirdly mine was quite light. I had cramping two weeks beforehand though that I hadn't experienced before. My third pp one has been the heaviest, but was also nothing crazy. I was expecting mayhem for the first one since it had been 9 months. I didn't know hormones while breastfeeding could make it lighter.

@FannyMae: It was like a murder happened in my pants. I thought I was hemmoraging. The only thing that could stem the flow were super overnight maxi pads (not the ultra thins, the big guns). Thankfully, every period after that one was normal.

I'm currently 9.5 months post partum, and seems like my first period is coming :crying: I've been exclusively breastfeeding and in the last two weeks I have had some breakthrough bleeding/spotting for a day, and then back to nothing. It seems my period is finally on its way now though, and I'm dreading it - with DD1 it was like the floodgates of hell opened up, but she was formula fed and I'm wondering if it might be different this time.

Any BF mammas out there to tell me about your first post partum period while exclusively breastfeeding? I'm wondering if it might be a light period due to the BF hormones, or if I'm about to experience hell unleashed again
