@MrsTiz: That's crazy about not being able to see the heartbeat before 12 weeks. I'm 10 weeks now and saw it very clearly on ultrasound last night in the ER.

@KJfromNJ: Oh you can totally hear it, last time (at this same office) they had me come in at 8 weeks, they did an US to see for a heartbeat, so it boggles my mind that they are saying you can't see it now, and if you are going to have a MC, you shouldn't worry about it until 12 weeks.

@Grace: She was on vacation in October for all my drama last time, and now shes's on vacation in March when I need her. Makes me feel confident in knowing she would be around when it's time to give birth. Not.

So. It all comes down to vacation. Sigh.

For what it's worth, I had appointments at 5, 9 and 12 weeks and the earlier appointments were a waste of time. Blood pressure, scale, pee in cup. They don't do early U/S where I live and I could have easily waited until 12 weeks for an appointment.

@MrsTiz: I am reading some of the replies and um, CAN'T SEE HEARTBEAT well before 12 weeks? Pretty sure I saw my baby's very clearly. And what if you had a tubal pregnancy, or another complication, or TWINS like you mentioned?!? You'd want to know. Glad you are looking around for another practice. I was mad at first that mine wouldn't confirm with a blood test but everything else has been great. I think you can definitely find one that has your health and your baby's health more in mind.

My first appt was 6 weeks but it was basically a Q&A and some testing. First U/S at 7 weeks. My SIL though got a blood test at 5 weeks and then didn't go back til 12 weeks for her first U/S. So I guess it varies!

That is just ridiculous!! They should've granted you an appt pretty much right away at least for the reason of previous m/c.

With that circumstance and your OB going on vacation, they could either 1) squeeze you in or 2) just let you see another Dr in the office. Is it that terrible if you see another doctor before your "own"? I understand that these practices often have many rules about stuff like this, but there's gotta be some flexibility when it comes to patients' varying medical histories, scheduling conflicts, and "real life" in general.

I agree with the others that say to find a new OB office! Hopefully they will be more accommodating. It's sad... some OB offices treat patients like cattle!

I was in a different situation, so I was seen very often from week 5... But agreed w pp, especially since u had miscarriage.... Most places will at least confirm w blood test early on. My place wanted to see me at 8 weeks. By then, you can see a baby and the heart beating. Good luck w the new ob! Definitely would have left your previous one too!!

Sorry I did not read all responses - but here is what I know from my experience.

I called my doctor at 6W and said I needed an appointment - at this point the office informed me they were scheduled through mid Feb (which would be my 11-13W). I kinda freaked out. My step father who is an OBGYN was the next on my call list and he got an earful from me (he is the one who referred me to the office I go to). He told me that technically they dont need to see you until you are 12 weeks. He said no major testing is done in advance of that (like the first tri screening) and basically all they need to tell you on that first visit is take your vitamins and obvious donts (smoke, drink...blah blah).

I was still frustrated but had resigned myself to not getting in until 12 weeks.

I definitely understand your frustration (as I was there too) but thats the reason I got for this response from a Doctor with 35 years of experience.

@MrsTiz: as some who mc'd previously, early care was important to me when I was looking for a new doctor. I had three HCG tests plus one progesterone test at four weeks to confirm everything was heading in the right direction. My first appointment and u/s is a little over seven weeks due to scheduling. Both my RE and OB understand why I'm really nervous and need extra care.

If I were you I would switch. I'm sorry you have to wait so long. I wouldn't trust their EDD. Hang in there and I can't wait for you to join us on the October board!

I had an appointment with a nurse at 7 weeks to fill out paperwork. I didn't see a doctor until 11w4d which is when I had my first ultrasound and heard the heartbeat. Honestly, I think the timeline sounds normal but I'm surprised they don't want to see you sooner because of your previous miscarriage.

@Beehive: "The office is essentially offering no first trimester care" this exactly. I asked about that, here are the reasons why (you might want to sit down)

-You can't see the heartbeat good enough before 12 weeks
-If you are going to have a MC, there is nothing they can do about it, so why go through the emotional stress of knowing about it?!
-12 weeks is when you are in your safe zone, so why see them before then?

...I have no words.

Okay, update!

I just got back from the doctor, they confirmed pregnancy, gave me a due date based off of my LMP (October 8!!!!!) and said I was 9 weeks. I complained and bitched about the wait for an ultrasound, seeing as how I don't know if I am for sure 9 weeks, or if i'm having twins, or if it is still okay..whatever. They agreed to give me an earlier appointment - I go to checkout and my doctor is on vacation until NEXT Friday which would be *drumroll please* TWELVE WEEKS. Well, just a few days shy of it anyway.

I swear I could blow smoke out of my ears right now.
To answer PP's, yes I had a MC in October, I made every person there aware of that today. Buuuut my doctor is on vaycay, and I am not allowed to see other doctors first.

Needless to say, I left a message with another practice and will see what they say when they call back. Never using my current office again.

Wow, that's really crazy. The office is essentially offering no first trimester care. My doctor wanted to see me at 6 weeks, and gave me an ultrasound, an exam, and took a lot of blood for bloodwork. She also sat down with me and went over everything I needed to know for the pregnancy - food do's and don'ts, 1st and 2nd trimester screening tests and when to schedule them, etc.

I would absolutely change practices. Notwithstanding your prior history, not only is 12 weeks not standard of care, they're being inflexible when you've specifically requested an earlier appointment.

especially with a prior MC i'd definitely demand to be seen.

I got my bfp at like, 3 weeks 2 days or something crazy (9 dpo!) and called that week, they had me come in at 8 weeks for the nurse practitioner visit (paperwork, dos and don'ts, family history, bloodwork) and scheduled me for 10 weeks for the first OB appt and dating ultrasound.

ETA - my LMP was Dec 20, and my first ultrasound was around end of February.
