That's just nuts! We paid out of pocket here and NT was around 60 usd, blood/urine around 40 usd.

Last time, it was covered 100% b/c I was double covered. I just got a bill in the mail from the State and it was just for the blood work and it's $162.00 I'm not sure yet how much of that my insurance will cover.

Our's is covered (blood tests + NT scan) but our state also does 12 week and 16 week blood testing for health statistics which is free for anyone who wants it, so I think that part is free for everyone.

Mine was covered - I can't remember if I just had to pay a specialists co-pay (only NT screener in my area is a specialist), or if I had to pay something more. My maternity coverage was 90%, and also didn't require co-pays for most of my office visits

No, we would have had to pay ou of pocket for the genetic screening/NT scan. Would have been close to $2k. We opted out.

@Mae: that stinks that you have to meet the deductible twice! We lucked out and, pending this healthy pregnancy continues (I'm 9 weeks), it will all be 2014's deductible.

I called my insurance company when we started TTC, and basically found out that it's all about meeting our deductible within the calendar year. The bottom line is that we won't pay more than $2500 out-of-pocket from 1/1-12/31, and that includes everything ( prenatal tests, screenings, hospital stays, etc.) For us the MaterniT21 test is optional and we'll pay probably $200ish, but the info is too important that we'd be willing to " splurge" if need be. I figure it's all just going towards that price!

Ours was covered, but my OB called our insurance to make sure it was before the appointment. Most of those types of scans need to be pre-authorized. When the pre-authorization isn't approved, they should let the patient know.

Ours would have been "covered" (had I opted to get it, which I did not) at 80% if I had already met my deductible. But I had not, and am pregnant over two different years (yayyyy double deductible for the same effing pregnancy...). So I guess technically yes it would've been "covered" by the plan, but for practical purposes I would've had to pay the whole thing out of pocket.

Mine was not fully covered, I had to pay 10% of the blood work until we reached our $300 deductible. I too was shocked how much they charged for certain things - a cystic fibrosis test was $1,456 (I owed nothing, thankfully) alone!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Wow, that is a huge chunk of money! I'm in a totally different country and thus a different health care system and the NT scan and accompanying bloodwork is never covered here but it cost us ~ $300 out of pocket! So that's still a massive difference to your $1650.75
