Update:
I did a basic will (with guardianship clauses) and a Power of Attorney, allowing my parents to make healthcare decisions while we are away, on rocket lawyer (for free!) and had them notarized at work.
I'm also leaving them a folder with LO's birth certificate, a copy of his vax schedule, and his insurance card.

@lioneyes: Ditto. We did what @Truth Bombs: indicated. We actually do this each year (DH also has a notary at work so its easy) for all three sets of grandparents and for the one babysitter we use for overnights.

As for wills and guardianship docs. DH and I discussed and feel comfortable that my Mom would take custody of DD...we have casually mentioned to my dad and my ILs and everyone seems comfortable with that. We have beneficiaries set up properly so we feel that is all in order enough.

After LO#2 is born in March we will probably formalize paperwork and perhaps assign a sibling (3 between both of us) to be the guardian of both our kids.

Each time we have gone, we have done the same as Truth Bombs indicated. We have put a start date to that letter and specified our planned return date as well.

I wrote a letter giving my parents the authority to make any and all necessary medical decisions and then my husband and I both signed in front of a notary (I have a notary at work so it was more convenient for me than it is for most). I left that letter along with LO's Health Insurance card.

We are going away for the first time, without LO (12 months). My parents will be staying at our house with him. What documents should I have prepared before the trip so I have peace of mind? I know we need a will and guardianship papers for longterm thinking, but do I need to do anything specific for this stay (ie- what if he needs to go to the dr. while we are gone? )
