@Dr. Pepper: I'd probably stay here: http://m.sancarloshotel.com/

They have a special going for 15% off summer stays longer than 2 nights. The rooms look big for NYC and it has great reviews on TripAdvisor (ranked #33 of 464 hotels in NYC). I plugged in your dates and it was a little over $1K (which I think is a great deal for 4 nights!). That rate also includes breakfast.

@Dr. Pepper: the tkts site has what shows they usually have available so you can get tickets. Then I think you go morning of for the night show. So you couldn't get tickets to, say, Wicked but you can check the website and see what they usually have.

We stayed at the Knickerbocker, which was an awesome hotel! It's right in Time's Square, so centrally located to everything. The hotel itself had a large room, very modern/sleek furnishings, and had complimentary water and sodas in the mini bar! I recommend you check it out!

When we stayed in NYC back in 2010 for our mini-moon, we used http://www.lastminutetravel.com . It is one of those sites that doesn't tell you the name of the hotel, but it tells you the amenities and blocks from various locations. We ended up staying in the beautiful Empire Hotel for 3 or 4 nights for $600 total (which is at your price point, though this room had just 1 queen bed). It was a GREAT deal and we were 100% pleased with the whole experience - searching, booking, staying, etc.

I finally booked tickets for August 12-16th! Now that I have solid dates, I need to start looking specifically into places to stay. Thanks everyone for your help!

@Trailmix: How easy is it to get tickets from the TKTS booth? My mom is worried we won't get to see what we want to see and thinks we should book at least one show ahead of time. Is that necessary? We did the last minute ticket thing in Las Vegas and it worked out really good for us. We bought cheap tickets near the back and no one was there so we got moved up to the 10th row!

Another NYer here....I would not stay in Times Square. I totally get why tourists want to visit it but staying there sounds like a nightmare. I agree with others...I'd look in Chelsea, Soho, Nolita, UES, UWS, Murray Hill. You have to take NYC hotel rooms with a grain of salt because they are much smaller than rooms in other places.

There is so much to do in NYC that you will have an amazing time with that much time to spend here.

I would not stay in Times Square, personally. There are so many wonderful neighborhoods with charm and personality, whereas Times Square is just all tourists and chains. If you want to see a Broadway show, a great way to get cheap tickets the same day is to go to the TKTS booth (which is in Times Square, ha), they have discounted tickets to lots of shows!

We have had family visit and stay in AirBnB places many times and never had an issue, so I really wouldn't worry about the fact that it's 'illegal', as long as it has good reviews.

If you're set on staying in a hotel, I do think you might have to up your budget a bit and I can only recommend places in my neighborhood (the Upper West Side, or the Upper BEST Side as I like to call it, LOL!): The Excelsior, The Lucerne, Nylo Hotel, and Park 79, which is probably the most affordable of those options!

There's lots of HB-ers in NYC and we are happy to help you plan your trip!

Take a look at the Washington Square Hotel - it's right on Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, downtown but very central, walking distance to all the great downtown neighborhoods (Soho, East/West Village, Union Square, Lower East Side...) and close to all the subway lines. I'd suggest visiting Times Square but not staying there - too busy and crowded, all the time.

I have only been a couple times but I do not like staying in Times Square. It was nice to go thru one day and see everything, but I hated our stay there (Hampton Inn). Too loud, too busy, too crowded. We stayed in Chelsea at the Double Tree, it was great. And we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, Tribeca area, great hotel/ ok area nice and close to the subway. Have fun!!

First time in NYC, I would stay in Manhattan. I liked staying at the Four Points Sheraton in Chelsea and Soho a few years ago - they are near the subway and also have enough restaurants and shops that in walking distance but check trip advisor for recent reviews. Another time I pricelined it and stayed at the Hudson Hotel not far from Columbus Circle - also a really good location - though the reviews on it were mixed - I had a positive experience and they have a hip restaurant/bar. If you do not like crowds, stay away from Times Square. If you like food - try a tour with foods of ny tours - I loved it and there are a bunch of really good reviews on trip advisor.

@ms.line: Interesting. I doubt my mom would feel comfortable with that. I will definately make a rough itinerary before going, but I haven't gotten to that stage yet! I will add the Natural History Museum to my list to look at. I love museums. The little guy isn't coming with us! He's staying with daddy. Yay for mom's only trip! Unless of course I'm pregnant, then that baby will come with, but it'll be pretty easy to take care of :)

I'm going to go against the grain and say don't use airbnb. Although most people have wonderful experiences, short term rentals of apartments is actually illegal in NYC. The law is loosely enforced so in all likelihood you would not have a problem, but if a condo/co-op building decides the enforce the law when you arrive, you'll be left across without a place to stay. There are plenty of hotels to choose from - you just may need to up your budget a bit

@Dr. Pepper: Airbnb is a website where people offer short-term rentals of their rooms/apartments/condos/houses to others. It's very popular in big cities, and the vast majority of renters have great experiences. You usually get a much larger room for a lower price than using a traditional hotel.

I'd definitely suggest making a rough itinerary ahead of time, since NYC can easily become overwhelming if you're new to cities of that size (especially with a little one). I'd recommend a stop at the Natural History museum!

I definitely agree with @psw27: and using tripadvisor before making reservations. I lived in PA for most of my life and DH loves going to NYC. Since we used to live 2-3 hours away, we usually just go for the day. I have stayed overnight in NYC twice. I forget where we stayed but the rooms are so small for the price you pay. It is a big (ok, huge) city and I have stayed in other big cities before but the rooms in NYC (near Times Square) are the smallest I ever seen. Like the room was a smidge bigger than the bed. Rooms were nice and updated but small.

It will also depend on what sights you want to see. If you want to do Ellis Island, World Trade Center, and Brooklyn, then stay downtown. If you want to do Empire State Building, Central Park and 5th Ave, stay in MidTown. So I would start out by figuring out what part of town you expect to spend the most time in.

I agree with others to look into an Air Bnb or perhaps a hotel in Brooklyn if you are budget cap is super strict. If you are interested in hotels in Manhattan, I would actually look into the Financial District. It’s not as central, but there is great subway access in the area. You might be able to find a good hotel deal down there. It can get quiet as there are a lot of office buildings and the area empties a little in the evening, but you are close to Tribeca, Chinatown, and the Lower East Side.

Other neighborhoods in downtown like Gramercy Park area/Flatiron/Union Square are good because of good subway access and are not too far from Midtown attractions. The subway will get you anywhere quickly so whether you stay downtown or midtown, it won't matter too much.

Good luck!

My usual trips are to the Outer Banks of NC where we book flights alone because we have a family cottage out there- no need to book hotel/flights together. So, I'm not used to booking together, maybe I should check that out! Was that $2200 per person, or total?

@ms.line: definately not a strict under $200 budget. Actually really flexible, but I always try to be frugal. I figure I won't be staying at the hotel much. I'm there to see the sights! My work browser won't load the Ace's website, but it look like about $250/night with great reviewed on tripadvisor. I can't wait to get home and look at their website. Thanks!

I would recommend staying in Time Square. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inns and we were pretty happy with them! We booked through Expedia and it was about $2200 (canadian) total for flight and hotel for 5 nights.

From where I live, flights are about $400-500 to fly to New York, so this was a good deal for us.
