With DS I had a ultrasound at 7w and the doctor couldn’t find anything. Just an empty sac. I was sure of dates so it was pretty devastating. I had recently had 22w and 11w losses. I went for a follow up at 9 weeks and baby was there measuring on time at 9+1. So for me at 7w there was no heartbeat or anything!

All scheduled for June 6th! And my LMP is now 4/4 instead of 3/27. 😉

Thanks, ladies!

@nwm: yes, exactly to all of this--that's why I told OP just to be firm on the date. I love my practice (not far from where you are!) but one of the OB's there in particular was super dismissive of my charts, which were *dead on* accurate. I think if you're dealing with that it's a helluvalot easier to just lie about LMP.

@CatchAFallingStar: I “lied” about my LMP date both times. Don’t regret it one bit. I was tracking just like you so I knew my ovulation date and it eliminated any of the arguing and explaining that so many people seem to have with their OB’s and my scans were always spot on.

Congrats! I've had two ultrasounds at 6 weeks and saw a hb both times, but don't freak out if you don't. Whether they see it can depend on the exact dates, equipment, and skill of the tech.

Congrats again, such wonderful news!!!!

@CatchAFallingStar: I do think it makes sense to just give them a different LMP date. I love my practice and think my doctors are first-rate, but with all three of my pregnancies they have sort of nodded along when I say I have a long cycle and ovulate 7 days late, but still made offhanded comments about size, viability, and other things that I think would have really bothered me if I had a history of loss. Also, apparently the standard is that your due date is based on LMP unless you are measuring more than 5 days off. So even though I have an extra 7 days in my cycle, since the baby was growing within the 5 day window they were giving me a normal LMP due date, which is just wrong. I convinced them otherwise eventually but I guess my point is lying is just easier haha  Good luck, many fingers crossed for you!

@CatchAFallingStar: I skipped the offer of an early ultrasound my last pregnancy and didn’t have one until 10 weeks. The best thing I did for my own sanity even though my doctor thought I was crazy with my history of losses. Sadly we lost our little guy to Trisomy 18 but I’d do it again the same way if pregnant again. And I’m 41 and they didn’t push me for that early viability/dating scan when I said no.

@CatchAFallingStar: yes, I’d just tell them it was later. I ovulate around day 18 (and also usually have a 33 day cycle) and my dating scans have always matched with my tracking and late ovulation. Especially with number 3 and 3 because I was using opks and was more aware. The ultrasound place I was going to with this pregnancy had me down for a “viability” scan from my doctor and I could have gone in at 6+5 and she offered me an appointment, but I waited until 8 weeks for more peace of mind and based in advice from here.

So, I’m thinking about actually thinking about changing doctors (for a variety of reasons). The clinic I would be moving to doesn’t do any appointments before 9 weeks even for AMA. If I do switch, should I just tell them my LMP was later instead of giving them that date and then having to explain all the ovulation info, etc.?

@LCTBQE: I had positive digital OPKs on 4/16 and 17. And a temp shift on the 19th. So, I’m pretty certain.

yeah, I told the nurse about it over the phone today.. she said they’ll base it on my input as well as this first ultrasound and the one that follows in June

@ShootingStar: thank you!

@Petitduck: yeah.. I think I saw it with my girls at 6 weeks, but that was with an RE who may have had better equipment

@skinnycow: I’m so sorry for your loss. :crying: They want me to come in early because I’m 40. Originally, they scheduled my first appointment June 11th, but added this one for “viability.” I’m just so so so nervous. I only just found out yesterday and already so in love with this baby. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I’d push it back a little if you can. I saw a heartbeat with my last pregnancy at 6+1 but baby stopped growing just a few days later. I think if you wait until you’re 7-8 weeks there will be a little more certainty that things are okay.

I’d follow the above advice about pushing back the appointment just so you’ll for sure see the heartbeat based on your calculations , not theirs. 6 weeks exactly is basically right in the cusp of seeing it and even though there would be no issue with not seeing it then, it would without doubt cause stress (or it would for me anyway). I saw a heartbeat at 6+5 with my second pregnancy via abdominal ultrasound and only a yolk sac with this pregnancy (third) at 5+6 or something like that and they did a transvaginal just to see. Congratulations!

I would just tell them you were tracking your cycle and you ovulated on day 22. I ovulated late with LO2. I think around CD30. My cycles then were right around 6 weeks, so ovulating at 4 weeks made sense. Plus I’d been taking tests since about 5DPO so I knew there was no way I’d ovulated any earlier or it would’ve shown up on the tests. I think they thought I was kinda crazy, but my calculation matched the dating ultrasound so they went with it.

I would just be super firm with them about your true ovulation date so they don’t freak out and then scare you. Were you charting or using opk’s, or how do you know? And then if it was me I’d push the appointment to 6+4 or 6+5 if possible, I think you’ll have a better idea of what’s going on by then.

I saw a flutter at 6+3 and baby was measuring 6 weeks. There wasn't a measurable heartbeat until 6+6 when baby measured 6+4. I had bleeding between the two scans and was under the care of an RE so I got extra scans.

Just found out yesterday that I'm pregnant. YAY! This will be our third.

So, my first appointment will be in two weeks from today. Based on my LMP, I am 5W2D right now. However, I think that's WRONG! I didn't ovulate until cycle day 22, so that calculation would be off. They will most likely say baby is small compared to LMP.

Adjusted for my ovulation date (4/18), I am 4 weeks exactly today. So, I will have just turned 6 weeks for this first ultrasound. Should I expect to see a heartbeat? Should I be concerned if I don't?

So many "what-if" questions.
