@lawbee11: takes too long to get to key west! We went once when we were in Miami, prebaby, and it was actually colder than Miami but that was just a fluke I think.

Now I'm back to thinki Puerto Rico. And to needing to convince Dh.

I say go for it! we haven't flown with LO yet, but we did take a roadtrip and she did great. She loved staying in hotels and swimming in the other pools, it was small but it was fun. I wish we would have taken a flight with her before LO2 comes, but it's too late now as I'm hitting the "no fly zone" in my pregnancy.

You never know until you try it...I think you have to prepare for the worst and then be surprised at how smooth things go wrt to travel. And plus, just because one time they were angels, doesn't mean they will be again, and vice versa.

@Anagram: those are really the two places we are looking. I'm worried that Florida in March we aren't guaranteed great pool/beach weather. I like the idea of a condo complex with a pool though, good mix of having your own space but still a resort feel.

I'm convinced we should go somewhere. Now I just need to convince Dh- I may have better luck after we pay the credit card bills from christmas. :silly:

@Foodnerd81:Florida or Puerto Rico? Pensacola Beach is a really family-friendly beach because it's almost all condo rentals, so you have a fridge and kitchen, AND the water is almost glass-still, perfect for babies. I went this past August and paddleboarded for the first time and it was super fun.

ETA: I could actually PM you the specific condo complex we stayed in--it was one of the cheapest I could find, but it was super clean and nice, 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, and the condo complex had a pool--and this unit wasn't on the beach, but the complex was on the beach...so you just walked past the pool area through a second row of condos to the beach. It was about half the price of the other condo rentals I was looking at.

We took our kids really young, both times to the beach, and we've traveled a lot with them since. What I can say is that sometimes they adjust well and sometimes not so much. Often times we end up cosleeping. But when all is said and done I barely remember the bad sleep and just all the wonderful memories we've made. Seriously I have never regretted any trip and as long as you keep expectations low I think you will have a good time!

We took a week long trip to the beach (which is only an hour and a half drive from home) when DS was 19m old. It definitely felt like a vacation and was wonderful. He LOVED it. We're going back this summer.

We had taken her on several weekend breaks in the U.K, just driving, from 2 months onwards. She usually did great so we decided to take her on her first flight to Spain at 11 months...I think we probably picked one of the worst times to travel since she was mobile but not yet walking and also just beginning her picky eating phase. I'm not going to lie, it was tough and we had to massively change our expectations of what our "holiday" was going to be like, but we all survived and I would do it again, only maybe a few months later.

We are travelling overseas this year at 19, 21 and almost 24 months so it'll be interesting to see what challenges those ages bring!

@Foodnerd81: We went on a transatlantic trip when LO was 5 months and again a year later. He was even going through a sleep regression for the second trip. I actually found it quite easy to deal with while on vacation since one stays in the same room anyways. So I'd say go for it.

We traveled a ton with DS in his first year (a ton of new cities and 4 new countries!). Our very first trip with him was at 4 months, just a long weekend to Martha's Vineyard. Other than screaming in the car seat the whole way, he was a great traveler. Our first big trip was to France when he was 6 months, the jetlag was rough, but everything else was fine. If you can do an all-inclusive somewhere warm, it would probably feel more like a real vacation because then you wouldn't have to worry about cooking, which I always struggle with with LOs.

@Foodnerd81: I suppose 6 hrs is kind of long, but compared to the 15+ hrs flight (a full day's travel) to visit family, it felt like a breeze!

I think you should go. Even if it is difficult, you'll have the warm weather to relax outside in (that was our rationale, at least)

LO was 19 months old and we had a relatively short flight (6hrs) but with travel time, it took all day. It really helped that we spent the night at the airport before our flight. In the 2 weeks we were away, LO really blossomed! It all turned out surprisingly well, except she refused to sleep in her crib when we got home.

We went 3 hours away to a resort when she was around 9 months old and it was fun. I mean it wasn't relaxing and she was still BFing and therefore waking up in the MOTN, but it was fun to get out of the house and take her swimming. Our LOs are the same age and I'd totally go on a vacation with M.

But everyone else is swaying me that it might be worth the chance. We just don't want to spend a ton of money since so much of it will be dominated by her sleeping and whatever anyway.

We are debating this... Dd is 16 months old . Dh and i usually go down south somewhere every winter to escape the brutal canadian cold.. But our babysitters are all tied up during my spring break this year. So we are tossing around the idea of taking her with us.

I'm not sure if it would be at all relaxing though and worth the $$. Plus the last time we went to a hotel she was a DEVIL CHILD all weekend and refused to sleep. It was awful for everyone.

If we had lots of $$$ lying around I would totally go, but since vacations down south are so expensive when flying from Canada, I think we will probably save the money and take her in a year or two when she (and we) can enjoy it a little more.

How old was your LO when you first went on a family vacation- as in, not visiting a relatives house but actual vacation (even if other family was with you, I guess).

We haven't been on a vacation since I was pregnant and I'm sick of the New England cold. But I'm wondering if a warm weather vacation would actually feel like vacation at all or just more hassle taking care of the baby away from home. It doesn't help that she is just getting through a nice sleep regression, making Dh and I both a little skittish of taking her anywhere!

But, we don't have much longer to take advantage of a lap infant, and if we have another baby it will only get more difficult, so then I think we should just go.

Also trying to figure out someplace warm, direct and not too expensive flight from Boston, no passport required.
