I flew to norcal (an hour's flight from socal) when N was only 3-months old, and brought breastmilk back on the plane ride back in an insulated cooler bag. Your plan sounds like a good one!

This is a great link - she talks about the logistic of flying with breastmilk!

As long as you get to pump 1x every 4 hours I think you should be fine. Your supply might dip but you should be able to bring it back up with a few power pumping sessions.

Sounds like a challenge! TSA should allow breastmilk through, especially since you are travelling with LO. I've heard that some ask to smell it to verify what it is, but that's only happened once or twice that I've heard of. Can you take a few extra pouches, just in case? That way if you have supply issues, there's food for her, and you can always bring any extra you pump home.

No advice on all the logistics since I don't pump exclusively, but I did travel with over 100 oz of BM after a business trip and had zero issues with TSA. Of course every airport is going to be different, but I'd just print out the TSA guidelines and have them with you in case they give you any trouble.

I'm wondering what other EP moms do when they go away, especially when a plane ride is involved. I'm going away for Memorial Day weekend for an x-long weekend (leaving Friday afternoon, coming back Monday afternoon). I'm trying to formulate a plan for pumping, transporting milk, etc. Right now I pump about 20 oz a day and she drinks anywhere from 20-25 oz a day, so I'm working with a bit of a deficit each day that I make up for with a bag of thawed milk every other day or so.

I'm not too concerned about scheduling pumping times since I'm down to only 3 pumps a day, and I can be flexible since I can go 8-10 hrs without pumping. I'm mostly concerned with the logistics of providing enough milk and transporting it!

I THINK my plan is to bring a few bags of frozen milk to provide for the first 24 hours of feedings, so I won't have to worry about the milk going bad (they can slowly thaw during the trip until I can get them into a fridge when we get to our destination). The plane ride is only 2 hours and the car ride once we get there is another 2 hours, so I'm planning on bringing two bottles in my diaper bag to cover the entire trip. Then once we get to our destination, the bags of thawing milk can provide for the first 24 hours while I build up an inventory of a few pumped bottles in my first few pumping sessions.

I'm a tiny bit worried that I'll dry up randomly during the trip... then what will LMW drink?!? I guess if that happens I'll just start pumping round the clock and hydrating to try and get myself to start producing again. And what if TSA has a problem with the frozen breastmilk and take it away?

I'm SO close to being able to wean (LMW will be 9 months by then, and I have about a month's worth of frozen stash), I really don't want to have to introduce formula.. only because the process of getting her used to formula might be long and painful!! But the idea of traveling with formula sounds so, so, so easy vs all this frozen/thawed/freshly pumped milk and bringing my pump and scheduling pumping sessions.
