16 months here and if LO is actually saying something (besides just babbling) i can't figure out what it is. i can tell that in his mind he's talking about something specific, but he uses the same sounds for different things so i haven't been able to discern actual words.

'Uh oh' probably around... 11 months? 12 months? None too early. Then 'Book' was another month behind that one, and another month for 'Mama'

I have high standards for this one....we thought she might be saying things....but then at 10 months we realized whenever she wanted food she would say "mah" (like more). We tested it out, and gave her a small bit of something, and she'd say it. Then again. And she didn't say it in any other context.
Right around this time she said dada, too, specifically for my husband (although with that she does still use "da da" as an exclamation, and seemed to go through a period where all adults were "da da").
With dada she would say it when he walked in the door, and when we saw pictures of him. And she had it as a receptive word, so I could ask where he was and she'd look for him.

I feel like, when it was actually a word it became really obvious, some people don't have such high standards, though. A woman in a playgroup I go to claimed her 6 month old was saying the dogs name because he kept saying baba. He also called everything else baba. So personally, I wouldn't count that. Some people might! :)

Ball, not till 13.5 months. She'd say mama and dada before that, but not like she was calling for us or anything. Now, at 17 months, the words are coming fast!

ETA: she signed well before this and waved as well. I think she's just a quiet kid, which makes sense because both DH and I are quiet people.

I've been wondering the same thing. She's 8 months and says mama, dada, nana and then what sound like yeah and hi mostly always in the correct situation...but I just don't know when we'd be able to count it.

I think she was saying "hi" from a pretty early age because I'd always say it to her in the mornings. But her first real word was "duck" when we were out for a walk around a duck pond.

What was your baby's first word that you actually felt they understood what they were saying? DD is 9.5 months and I'm not convinced she knows what she is saying!
