DS's first clear word was "Gage". It's my nephews name and he was copying my SIL. When he first said it we thought it was one of nephews, but then we got it on video :) He was around 6 months at the time and only says it sporadically now, but "mama", "dada" more consistently.

Um, either LO is slow or I don't give him enough credit.
He'll say "ma ma ma ma" or other things that sound like words, but I really don't think they're actually associate with a concrete meaning for him. My favorite is when he sighs and says "Oh shhhh". Totally sounds like baby's first curse word.

Shoot, as soon as mama came out of his mouth I counted that as his first word even if he didn't know which one of us that was, lol. LO is 10 months now and he seems to know which one of us is mama or dada and doesn't really mix us up.

Her first word was mama. I know she knows what it means because she has only said it when she's really upset and wants me to pick her up, or stuck under the sofa and ottoman. (looong story.LOL) She needed helps, so she called for me. Most says it wasn't real since she'll just be 6months on Thursday, but I know my baby.

LO is almost 7months and said her first word (without knowing what she was saying) this week. She said, "ah-bba", which means 'dad' in Korean. She had been screaming 'aahhhhhh' and babbling some 'b' sounds so I kept repeating the two together and she finally just said 'ahbba'. I'm trying to teach her "umma", which is 'mom' in Korean.

1st word was "hi". We had a bet about when it would happen... Mr. Jacks said 6 months, but it actually happened late in her 7th month.

Charlie also made the sound for mama a bunch, but his first true word was ball. We caught it on the iPhone!

What counts as a first word?

I always thought it was when LO says something... and knows what she is saying. She has been saying "mama" for a while now, and has just learned "dada." But she'll say it all day long not having a clue what's coming out of her own mouth. Hubby says that counts, since she's technically saying a word. What do you think?

And for funsies, what was your LO's first word? If hubby was right my LO's first word was "mama!"
