I was just thinking about this today! LO says dada but he has no idea what it means, so I hesitate to call it his first word. He has also been saying baba and wawa (no mama yet, womp womp).

At 9 months she babbles constantly. And I think she may be saying "da" for dog, because she looks right at the dog and says it, and the other day my mom was on speaker phone and her dogs barked and Madeline said "da!" I'm not calling it yet though. She has to convince me a bit more :)

@Mrs Green Grass: This is us too! Our LO is 11 months and has been saying dog (as da of course) all the time while looking at and reaching for our dogs. I'd love to say mama or dada was his first but I still feel like he just says those words without them meaning us.

LO had been saying "mama" and "dada" from the time he was about 8 months old but I think it was kind of arbitrary- not necessarily with any context or to us, specifically. At about 11 months, though, he declared "duck!" and could identify his duckie lovey and pictures of rubber duckies.

When E was 6 months old, she put her hand on DH's face and said, "dada". But she's never done it since, so it was coincidental. The other day, it sounded like she said, "uh oh" and she'll sometimes say "yeah" but I'm waiting for something to be deliberate and intentional for me to count it as a word.

Excluding mama and dada because he's babbled that forever, he just started saying "Ball!" at 12 months.

Anything round is "ball!" He has some play fruit and chases the apples and oranges and plums yelling "ball!"

Granted, a lot of non-round items are also "ball," so to him it might mean "object I like and I can see" but it's definitely his first word.

My ILs were trying to convince me he said "birdie" at 11 months. Yeah...my 11 mo old looked at the tree you were pointing at across the yard and noticed the little chickadee and said "buh." Sure....
