My big fitness / exercise is playing competitive tennis 2-3 days a week. I'm 25 weeks now and am still playing as much as I did before getting pregnant! You can definitely keep up a lot of your working out while pregnant (you just aren't supposed to start new things your body isn't used to)!

@meredithNYC: Good for you!! The pelvic pain really gets in the way! I hear you.

AFM, I'm almost 36w, and my doctor told me to stop exercising completely at 30w because of a short cervix! No bed rest, just no exercise. She did say, though, that once she sees me for my 36w check-up and everything looks okay, I can go nuts at the gym. :) So to speak.

I'm still happy about the exercise I was able to put in prior because I feel like I've developed an appreciation for and enjoyment of exercise that I hope won't go away when I'm trying to lose the baby weight. I also think the strength I gained earlier has helped me to avoid back pain and most discomfort completely. This pregnancy has been a breeze compared to what I've heard/expected!

Checking in to see how people are feeling! I'm 34 weeks and feeling HUGE. Still doing barre 3 or 4 times a week, but it's super tough when I'm just do tired and heavy. And I have so much pelvic pain! Not sure how much longer I can manage working out, though I would love to continue as long as possible.

@meredithNYC: Thanks! It's kind of a pain being so dependent on exercise to level my moods - I wish they'd just level on their own. But, it is nice to 'have' to do it, generally. I'm just glad I can now! And this was an especially energetic day, and they probably won't all be this perfect. But still, very encouraging.

Annnnnnd then, of course, today is a totally different day! I was able to get my first good bike ride in since getting pregnant - and I just feel amazing. It really shows me how dependent my mood is on exercise - which is a really mixed blessing.

I think the key is to just keep trying and go easy on yourself. That's great you got on the the bike, and great you knew not to push yourself. A lot of people (myself included) would take that as "I'm not going to get back on the bike again while pregnant" but I think if you just keep attempting to exercise in moderation and listen to your body, you'll find a nice balance. Also, don't underestimate the power of hormones to make you feel crazy and not like yourself!

@sarac: oh, I'm sorry! I was feeling that way last week when I sprained my ankle. Combined with the January misery I was feeling bad and I was so unpleasant to be around. It's rough when you rely on exercise to help with your mental and emotional outlook , as well as your physical health.

@meredithNYC: I'm really struggling. I'm finding that I just don't feel like myself without the heavy exercise that I'm used to, and I'm struggling with feeling really resentful. I'm also having trouble with water retention, and I'm sure my low level of exercise isn't helping that. I'm glad that it's winter, at least, and I'm not missing out on the nice weather. But it's really hard to see my husband train and go for long rides, and be in the best shape of his life.

I'm a big mopey moperson about it this week basically.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I'm starting to get more pelvic pain at 27 weeks, which is causing me to slow down a bit. I try to do barre every other day, but sometimes just have to listen to my body. It's frustrating, though I know it's normal and just a temporary setback in the larger scheme of things.

Because I am not able to work out as much, I'm definitely trying to clean up my diet - fewer carbs, more fruits and vegetables.

@sarac: It took me until 16 weeks to get back to working out at all for both pregnancies. For the first one I got back to CrossFit and worked out every other day until my due date. I felt like such a badass and even increased weight on some of my lifts from pre-pregnancy.

After having a difficult birth with LO1 I don't plan to work out so hard this time around. I'm only 17 weeks with #2 so I don't know what the fitness future holds.

Well, I hit 12 weeks yesterday, and I've been feeling way more energetic. So, I thought I'd try to get a nice bike ride in. Nope! A mile in, I knew I didn't have the 15 miles in me and we turned around and came right back. Such a disappointment!

I'm going to be the downer on this thread and say that I was in pretty good shape before getting pregnant, but I was never able to do anything besides walking while pregnant because I was just so sick and working full time + commute just took so much out of me. It made me really sad not to be able to be one of those fit preggo ladies who can continue their regular routine. I hope you are able to get back to the things you enjoy soon!

@Tippy0707: I took a few months off of weight training and have gone back. i'm not doing the high impact stuff like sprints, and I'm not lifting 100+ lbs overhead anymore, but I'm definitely not refusing the weights just because I haven't gone in awhile! I dont' think you lose everything that quickly :)

I'm feeling this way too. I was in the best shape of my life before I got pregnant. I was going to a personal trainer 3-4 times a week, paddleboaring & biking in the summer etc. I continued to go to my trainer until I was 8 weeks pregnant. Then we went to Mexico for 2 weeks and when I got back I just couldn't find the energy to get up and go in the morning. Also, even though I was fortunate and never had morning sickness, I would always feel a bit uneasy and tired and just blah in the mornings. I resigned myself to starting back up at the start of my second trimester. Then December happened...Christmas parties, festivities, all that extra eating and baking. Now, I'm 20 weeks and it's been recommended that I not take up any new strenuous activities. So, I guess training will have to wait until after I have this babe in May. I've started prenatal yoga and walk regularly but I really do miss training and feeling fit. Although, I can't really complain about my weight gain (around 8 lbs @ 20 weeks).

I did feel like this half-way through my first pregnancy but don't be sad! You get all the endurance back. I went back to practices 4 weeks PP and was back on the field (starting?!), along with another mom on my team by 4 mo PP.
The lovely thing about pregnancy is that all the increased blood volume is like altitude training, so you end up having more endurance. Add the fact that you carry around an extra 20-50lbs everywhere you go and you actually end up not too bad!

You'll be okay! I was exhausted during the first trimester - I went to bed at 7 every night. I was so sick until like 5 months or so, that I couldn't workout nauseous. And then I had really low iron diagnosed then, that even laying down felt exhausting. Took months to get back to normal that the day I went into labor was the day I felt the best the entire pregnancy.

Needless to say, I didn't work out much. I did what I could - and I walked a good bit. But was very inactive. I gained 40 pounds. Olivia was super healthy so I like to think she needed those 40 pounds.

By four months I had lost all the baby weight. I'm a great weight so I didn't want to lose any more than that. Was back to my ab workouts at 6 weeks pp. I don't workout as much because I spend the time with my little one, and work full time. It's totally a choice thing now - I have the time, I just choose to do other things. But my body went completely back.

Focus on your little one, and if it's a priority it wont take long to get you back to where you are now! Congratulations!!

@sarac: Ditto! This year I was in the BEST shape of my life! Lots of endurance, lots of strength, and I was feeling on top of the world! Got pregnant and I wish I could say I was able to keep it up, but because of some pressure I felt low in my pelvis, I had to start taking it down to 75% in 1st tri, then 50% in the 2nd. Now, almost in my 3rd tri, I had to quit CrossFit altogether and join a regular gym and stick to cardio and minimal strength training. Super disappointing.

I was never a competitive person, but I really, REALLY wanted to be the #1 fittest pregnant lady that everyone knew!! Dunno if that's gonna happen anymore. :P

I am dying to get back to the gym, but currently too sick or tired to make it. Need these next few weeks to fly by and for this nausea to pass asap!

I'm going to try to go starting Monday. I gained almost 40 w my ds and had a long labor that I think could've been avoided with fitness which I didn't upkeep thought my first pregnancy. I was a few lbs under preg weight with Ds this time and I'd like to upkeep my prebfp gym routine as much as I can!

I gave up all exercise during the first trimester. I managed a short walk or two with my DH. As soon as the nausea ended, I started my standard workout which lasted until I moved and didn't have the same exercise classes. Lost 20 of 30 pounds within two weeks. I doubt I'll lose the rest until I stop nursing.

I was able to get back into somewhat of a regular routine after the first trimester, but I'm certainly not as fit as I was pre-pregnancy and that's something I struggle with a bit. I know there is a (great!)reason why my body is handling things differently but it does frustrate me to not be at my normal capacity. But, all I can do is try my best and believe in myself and trust that I'll be back to my old fitness level after I give birth.

This has been really hard for me too. I would definitely not call myself a fit mom, but I had lost 30 pounds and was in the best shape I had ever been in before I got pregnant. Its been a long steady decline since then, with low blood pressure dizziness and really bad all day sickness in the first trimester...then the contractions started at 20 weeks and I was told not to even go for my long walks anymore. Now at 32 weeks I am on bed rest and facing another c-section recovery.

So yes, I feel pretty crummy. My body feels stiff and achy and tired. I hate the way I feel, especially after feeling so great! But I am hanging on to the fact that I did it once, and I will do it again as soon as I am able. I know what worked for my body last time and I am trying to control what I can right now by getting back to some good habits I had stopped...I gave up sugar the day after xmas, am focusing on adding lots more veggies back in my diet, and I am drinking more water. The exercise will come with time, but I am trying to be gracious with myself and remember this is only a season.

Hugs! I hope you start feeling better soon!!

I was super fit (like, best shape of my life) before I got pregnant with my 1st. I did light weights and ran I as could through the whole pregnancy. I felt the same way about getting out of shape. BUT, if you keep up the good habits while pregnant and after you have the baby (with some adjustments), you'll snap right back. I lost all my baby weight by 8 months pp and I actually ended up 7 lbs lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight at 10 months pp. It's been a little harder this time around, but that's because I've been slacking on my nutrition. (I'm now 9.5 months pp and 2.5 lbs away from pre-pregnancy weight, but still need to work on gaining my muscle back)

I'm not super fit, but I try to do barre classes 3-5 times/week and prior to getting pregnant felt strong and in shape, if not skinny. I'm 24 weeks now and am back into my routine. But first trimester? Nope. I just felt soooo shitty and couldn't face working out.

First trimester hits me hard too. But both times I had a great second trimester fitness wise. We have a bicycle trainer as well that I rode inside a lot during my third trimester. Best wishes!
