@BrentLee88: I would also suggest a set of 5 or 8 pound weights. Building strength is just as important as cardio, and the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn! Good luck!!!

I want an elliptical so bad! I used to be a cardio queen. Working out while watching TV works better for me than a video. With a video I get tired of the personalities, etc. For me pure cardio has always been the best way to lose weight. Different for everyone though!

@Cole: I am thinking elliptical for sure! i am not much for the gym i am a private person and feel uncomfortable working out in front of people, yes my doctor told me loosing weight can help my fertility even if it is a small amount so it got me motivated to get something at home to help me out, plus not to mention the better benefits of TTC :)

@septca: I have been leaning more towards the elliptical just because it does seem to be more of a workout and calorie burner i am looking for something that will really benefit me on working me out more, i would do a trainer but its way out of our budget, i figured if i get something at home i can do it privately i am not much for working out in public, makes me uncomfortable,

Since the weather is getting nice could you try being more active outside to get into the routine of exercising before investing in expensive equipment? Is there a community centre with affordable drop-in rates for their gym or classes close by?

If it were me, I would skip both machines and get some great videos or a gym membership somewhere that does fun classes. Cardio machines are BORING and I know so many people who have tehm collecting dust at home.

The key is to do something that you find fun, and that you're motivated to do. For me that's stuff like Zumba, hiking and even dancing with Wii games. Losing even a little weight can help with TTC.

If you are working out at a gym I vote you rotate between the two. Maybe even use the free session most places offer with a trainer to help you get a plan put together that would work for you.

If you are looking to buy one I would vote elliptical because you can always go outside to walk or to the mall etc.

I was listening to a podcast about birth and the midwife they were talking to said she recommends all of her patients as well as women ttc walk 2 miles a day. She listed tons of benefits, some related to birth and baby being more likely to be head down etc. but also the physical health and weight benefits plus the mental health side of things. So if you are overwhelmed why not start with that, go for a 30 minute walk around your neighborhood, a local park or wherever is safe and convenient for you.

I definitely burn more calories on an elliptical vs. a treadmill (or at least the calorie counter on the machines tell me I do!). I second the suggestion to try out both at a gym; some people love treadmills, for me they are deathly boring - I'd much rather use the elliptical or a stationary/spin bike.

@BrentLee88: Hey there! I'm a heavier lady here too TTC and working out! :-)

We have a trewadmill at home right now, but I am really kicking myself and I really wished we would have bought an elliptical instead! That's just personal preference though. I feel like I go in spurts though!

I personally would get an elliptical because the treadmill can be hard on your knees and joints. The most important thing is that you get a heavy, high-quality machine so that it doesn't feel flimsy when you are working out.

Start slow. The first thing you will need to do is build up your endurance and cardiovascular strength. I have had good luck with the couch --> 5k plan, and then you can keep adding time and intensity to your intervals to up your game.

If you can swing it, it might be really worth the investment to do 2-3 sessions with a good trainer. You don't need someone who is going to kill you in a workout, but rather someone who understands that you are looking for some good basics - both for strength training you can do at home and how to build a good cardio workout.
