I think the exercise looks great. I'm not a huge fan of calorie counting...it's exhausting and stressful to me. When I need to shed a few pounds, I look at what I've been eating and what could use some work. For instance, I'll try to snack less or if I'm hungry, snack on nuts, and fruit and veggies instead of mindless munching on chips, pretzels, etc. Or I'll stop eating while watching tv at night. Usually for a small weight loss like yours (6lbs), just increasing amount of cardio exercise and making a few tweaks to the diet should suffice.

@Mamaof2: I just wanted to chime in that while 1200 is the bare minimum of what you should eat, that's how much I aim for when I'm dieting as well. My normal metabolic rate is really low, so even consuming 1200 calories a day plus exercise, I never lose more than a pound a week (if that). It really depends on your metabolism!

Good luck to you!!!

@Mamaof2: you'll definitely lose weight eating 1200 calories and exercising every day as long as your eating clean. If I could suggest something it would be substitute 2 sessions of your bar or elliptical and add in some HIIT exercises instead to switch it up. I get bored easy so I try to switch up my workouts every week.

Good luck with your weight loss !

@Mamaof2: keep in mind that the 1200 that mfp gives you is net, so when you enter your exercise it will subtract the calories burned from your total daily calories. So say you eat 1400 calories, and burn 200 calories exercising, that's 1200 net calories.

1200 calories seems insanely low.

Just focus on eating clean food--lots of veggies and lean protein. Cutting out dairy helps a lot of people lose weight, too.

To lose a pound you basically need to exercise off or cut out 3,500 calories. That's how much a pound is gained or lost. You can do it all through exercise which is 500 calories burned a day. Or you can do an extra 250 calories through exercise a day (in addition to your normal levels) and cut 250 calories a day through diet. That would set you up for a weight loss of 1 pound per week.

@Mamaof2: whoops, I didn't explain myself correctly. 1363 would be your basal kcal rate, so those are the calories you need to just survive without wasting away. If you are able to figure out the calories your normally eat in a day, then you would subtract 500 from either diet or exercise. So say you eat 2000 calories a day currently, you could exercise to burn 500 calories a day and not change how you are eating, or you could eat 500 calories less. Orrrrr you could do 250/250. Does that make sense? Sometimes my dietitian brain is a little crazy :)

@KelLeeLeee: 120 - so after your calculation I should eat 1363 calories per day and then I need to eat 500 less ot lose weight? so 863?

I'm confused

@Mamaof2: how much do you weigh? Your basic calorie needs are 25 kcal per kg of body weight. So if you weigh 120 lbs, devise by 2.2 than x 25 and you get what you should aim for. Subtracting 500 kcal/ day either through diet or exercising will help you to lose a pound a week.

I would aim for between 1500-1800. Fruit is good, especially while working out. If you enter it all on mfp you can see your breakdown of carvs, proteins and fats and then you can determine where you are overeating and what you need to increase.

Thanks all!

So how many calories should I aim for? I put in that I wanted to lose 1 lb a week in MFP and so it put me at 1200 -

Or should I not focus on calorie input as long as I am eating "clean"

I did stock up on fresh veggies and fruit yesterday to snack btwn meals

I love Bar Method and I have seen great results from sticking to it over the years. That being said, I don't think it has ever helped me lose weight. Clean eating was the only thing that really did that for me. Bar Method is great for toning though (so you might look like you lost 6 pounds, even if you didn't). :)

Agree with the others - 1200 is almost nothing.

The kind of exercise you do is a bit less important than just doing SOMETHING and eating well. Also i'd start paying attention to your macros in MFP - if it's 1200 calories of 90% carbs, you're going to be struggling.

1200 calories seems really low if you are being fairly active. 50 minutes of activity is wonderful but remember you need to fuel your body as well with quality foods. Eating too few calories has the opposite effect of what you are looking for. I think you are doing a great amount of exercise though!

So I saw some pics of me on July 4th and was like "oh geez I have gained weight"

I weighed myself and I up 11 lbs since having my DS 5.5 yrs ago.

Great that its been a slow weight gain but sucky that I am pushing 40 and don't want to continue this trend.

So I started logging in MFP yesterday - I am at 1200 calories per day and this is my exercise:

Sun - Bar Method DVD - 50 mins
Mon - 25 mins elliptical
Tues- Bar Method DVD - 50 mins
Wed - 25 mins elliptical
Thurs - Bar Method DVD - 50 mins
Fri - 25 mins elliptical

Sat - nothing - Saturdays are busy

Its really hard to fit stuff in during the week - I work FT outside the home - I will wait till DH gets home so he can hang with the kids while work out.

Is this enough? Do I need to do more?

I would be happy with a 6 lb weight loss!
