Our 5month old was a champ her entire flight. We checked our carseat with our luggage and it was fine. We have a Britax seat, so we bought the Britax travel bag which also serves as a 'warranty' or 'insurance policy' if it's damaged in transit while in their bag, they will replace it. If you're worried, you can gate check it (no charge), meaning you can bring it to the plane but they'll throw it in with the luggage. My LO hates the car seat, and we would definitely need to make lots of stops. I had no other adult with me so I was nervous but it worked out really well. My best advice is to leave at bedtime. My kid normally wakes up every two hours when he's sleeping at home (ugh, I know) but in the car only fussed twice. We just check the carseat. But my lo hated the car seat, and even at 9 months she only tolerates it for 45 minutes max. We flew at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, and 8 months and it went so well each time- she slept the whole flight. We checked her stroller at the gate. Flying got to be a challenge when the little monster learned to walk- live it up while you can!
