@ladybee: In the laundry aisle at the grocery store! Its just old fashioned laundry detergent mostly. I got this brand:

http://www.20muleteamlaundry.com/

Just try to not let your pup (or LO if you have any) get it on their paws if they are a licker. Borax is pretty tame but you don't want your dog ingesting a lot of it.

@ladybee: this article addresses why preventatives sometimes fail: http://www.c-ville.com/the-itchy-and-scratchy-show-seriously-whats-up-with-all-the-fleas/#.U7xU95RkR8s

Do you have a flea comb, or something like the Furminator? That's how I found them.

@ladybee: I too have had the flea freak out so I feel your pain. We had an issue last year and again this year. Our dog is on Pet Armour but my DH said he still saw one.

One thing that I do that others haven't suggested yet is that I sprinkle Borax on the carpets and couches/chairs and our mattress (since our pup lays on our bed -- gross!! Fleas in my bed!!). I let the Borax stay for a while -- a few hours -- and then vacuum it up. I read somewhere the Borax kills the fleas and the eggs cause it can crack through their shells.

I also gave our dog Capstar to kill the live fleas. I got it on amazon.

Good luck, I know how itchy it makes you feel when you think about fleas!

@ladybee: I had some natural spray that my husband got at home depot that stunk like oranges that I sprayed on the couches, his dog bed, etc. I don't know if it helped, but it did make me feel like at least I was doing something :) I'd say get a flea comb and comb around his tail, or wherever his fur is thickest. Also wait til he's been sleeping in one spot for a while and then flip him over and check his groin area - they run away pretty fast, but I did see at least one every time I did that at the beginning before we started treating him. Good luck! Hopefully he doesn't really have fleas (or doesn't anymore) :goodluck:

@charmed: I do vacum frequently but I don't empty the canister outside. Great idea!

@Happygal: Ive searched him repeatedly and I don't see anything. I'm so confused! I also am starting to wonder why $10 a month flee preventive isn't doing its job...

@T.H.O.U.: Our vet recommended switching to Revolution so we are. Revolution also states that if your dog gets fleas while on it they will pay for treatment which is nice.

@Shutterbug: I am freaking out because he is allowed on 4 couches, 2 chairs, our bed, and everywhere in the house. He sleeps with us! I can't wash all of that! I bought some spray the vet had to spray our mattress and the furniture. I'm washing our bedding and his plus the babies stuffed items and blankets. I just find it so hard to believe the he has fleas when I can't see a single one!

My dog got fleas from my ILs dog last summer and I FREAKED out about it because our dog sleeps on the bed, on the couches, on us. Neither DH or I had any bites, but I first found the fleas in his groin area (as @Happygal: mentioned), as well as some flea dirt around his bum/backs of his legs. He was not on flea/tick topical at the time (you better believe he is now!)

Here's what we did that worked. I bathed him with flea bath twice (once a day I think? whatever the bottle said I could do) and then combed him and drowned any fleas I combed out in a bowl of soapy water. I did that (the combing/soapy water) about 3x a day for a week while I also vacuumed every day and washed all the bedding.

I was still finding fleas on him, although I never found any anywhere else but on him, and we decided to bite the bullet and bomb the house. We bought the kind that doesn't leave residue on things, but we still put all the dishes/food in the fridge and oven. I also dried all of his toys (he's a stuffed animal lover) on high heat in the dryer. That finally worked, and we didn't find any more fleas, although I kept combing him once a day out of paranoia for a month or two after. I think he started to like getting combed, haha.

I'm guessing the fleas are dead or left? It doesn't take that long for them to go other places. I'd just wash sheets/vacuum to be safe!

If you aren't seeing a ton of fleas I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may be time to switch up flea meds though

Glad you bumped--I miss this first time! I've experienced fleas with both my dogs, and they're on a monthly preventative.

I gave them an oral pill and took them for a walk so when they fleas and everything died, we'd be away from the house. I give them a topical med each month--not so wild about a strong systemic drug with her sensitive stomach.

I easily saw them in the groin area--they like the heat. It wasn't an infestation, but they were definitely there!

I also freaked b/c of what I read on the internet. I washed her bedding and anywhere else she had slept. Vacuumed, but didn't do much past that. Everything was fine. I think b/c it wasn't a raging case of fleas, a moderate approach was sufficient.

Good luck!

I think washing/cleaning the house well would be a good idea. I was once told that the best thing you can do to prevent/stop a flea infestation in your home is to vacuum frequently, and empty the vacuum outside of your house every time you use it.
(this will help get any live fleas/flea larvae out of the house)

If the vet only saw flea poop and no actual fleas, hopefully that means the flea medicine is working and killing the fleas (just after they left their "dirt").

We went to the vet today for various reasons. While there they used a flea comb to comb the pup. It clearly pulled up brown stuff that the vet referred to "flea dirt" which is really poop. I've searched and searched him and I don't see any fleas. He hasn't been digging and he's on flea, tick, and heartworm year round. Plus none of us have any flea bites.

Fleas make me want to freak. Would you be worried about it? I'm washing everything I can wash and I'm going to be cleaning as much as possible. I'm just not sure how crazy I need to go.

Thoughts?
